The Budget

I think it's good, people will start to realise what a horrible mistake it was to vote the tories in when they announce they're going to destroy this country like thatcher tried to.

Undoubtedly it'll be designed to crap on anyone who has no money and give the rich man lots of tax breaks.

Are you suggesting voting to keep the disastrous Labour government who frittered away our savings and managed to run up debts during a budget surplus would have been a good idea?

In before "Well don't let Labour "Help" us by spending so much then"

Eh? This isn't a 'Tory destroying the country' thing. Very similar cuts and taxes would be needed no matter which party was in power. The economic reality is way bigger than party politics.

It's all very well criticising this, that and the other. Let's have some REAL budget solutions.

  • Tax on Giant pub games including Jenga to be decreased to increase people going back to pubs
  • Benefit cheats must cost this country millions, so tests to be introduced every 3 days
  • Get a 'life of balance' credit card for the nation and put the debt on that
  • Use the new Dyson airblade fan to power the offshore windfarms

I LOL'd.

According to the BBC calculator just increasing VAT to 20% generates £12bn. Bargain! Many essentials are zero-rated anyway. The rich buy more stuff so pay more, it can be avoided by choosing not to buy stuff etc. It's a great tax to raise.

In fact I'd like to see the basic rate of VAT at least 20%, even 22%. Most of Europe is already 20% or more, only Cyprus, Luxembourg and Spain are lower than the UK. A few more essentials should be zero-rated but things like consumer electronics could have a super-rate of say 30%. People don't need fancy consumer electronics, they are pretty much all imported so damage our trade deficit and use energy.

Your statement on VAT is wrong, basic economics 101 shows lower paid people pay a higher percentage of their income in VAT. A rise in VAT will disproportionally effect lower income households. The rich save and spend on non VAT'ed items (housing etc.) in a higher proportion to the poor. It sounds illogical, but look at the stats. That's not to say a VAT rise is a bad thing, but we have to be careful, the UK is not a manufacturing economy and a VAT rise *could* spell disaster for the retail sector.

Some consumer electronics are considered essentials (computers I would count) so a blanket 30% VAT rate on them would be somewhat unfair.

Its going to be an interesting budget, I hope he has the guts to cut some of the NHS budget, its a real danger that we end up spending like the Americans (high proportion of GDP) without a great increase in health.

Also, VAT to 20% is a good idea. The drop to 15% was a disasterous attempt by Labour to win some PR which lost us a lot of needed money.

I think any rise in fuel duty would be suicide. The big things that will get hammered are alcohol and then I imagine an increase in tax on things like fast food etc under a health rouse i suspect.

Nothing short of a fierce kick in the nadgers will rescue the British economy. Here's hoping Osborne takes a good run-up.

Gotta be done sadly thanks to Labours interpretation of Liberalism which is give money to slags and lazy people.

Not a Tory but this is not their fault.

What about the immigants?

Lol, I may have to steal that if you don't mind.:p

It's going to hit everyone, no one can possibly deny this.
However, it is needed. This country has been living the high life with endless credit and what not for years and a seismic shift in peoples perception and view of money (credit) needs to happen.
Thankfully, this should assist in that and with a bit of luck we can get our coffers back in order and ensure that nothing like this can happen again so we can return to being a leader in many sectors.

Yes, frontline services will have to be cut but vast efficiency savings will be put in place. Labour grew our public sector massively for no reason, they essentially set money on fire.

Lets hope that those on the other side can understand the need for these cuts and not turn this into another political point scoring farce. Sometimes political allegiance needs to be set to one side to ensure the best for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Finally, is he allowed a drink with him like the Chancellor is in a 'normal' budget? I bet he needs one.
