Update

As I mentioned in this thread, a Taste London representative called me last week to confirm that she had received my email and was going to contact Chor Bazarre to see if they can find out what happened.

They got back to me today and were really apologetic that one of the restaurants on their portfolio could treat a customer like that, and they even passed on the sincere apologies from the restaurant owner.

To make it up to me on behalf of Taste London, they are offering me a years free membership. Mine ends in March 2011, so basically until March 2012 now. Usually this is around £70, or a little cheaper with some voucher codes.

Taste London also said that the restaurant owner would like to apologise to me directly and gave me his number. She also mentioned that he would like to give us a completely free meal to make up for what happened, because he feels that it was a one time incident and should not reflect the nature of his business. I tried calling earlier, but he wasn't in, so will call back tomorrow.

It is nice to see a business trying to make amends for a bad experience, especially on my Dad's birthday, so that is a plus. However I am not sure I would go back there. Not because I don't accept the apology, but I simply don't know what they might do to the food - you hear all the horror stories about people spitting in food etc. Instead I may ask for a refund for the amount I paid for my meal, as I would be perfectly happy with that :)

Original Story

For my Dad's birthday (21st June) we decided to go out for dinner at Chor Bizarre in London. I booked the table on Saturday 19th June and mentioned I had two Taste London Cards. The Taste London website states:

The restaurant offers tastelondon card-holders 2 for 1 meals (across all courses ordered), 2 for 1 means one tastelondon card applies for 2 people

Since there would have been four of us dining, this seemed alright and would work out to be quite a good deal.

Upon arrival I presented the cards to the waitress who informed me that I should show them at the end when I ask for the bill.

When ordering, we decided upon two thali dishes, which are actually recommended on the Taste London site:

Chef's Speciality Dish:

The Maharaja Thali

(A traditional royal platter with Sharabi Kababi Tikka Masala, Mirchi Korma,Nadru Palak, Zeera Aloo, Dal Makhni and Cucumber Raita served with Zafrani Pulao)

The food arrived fairly quickly and everything seemed alright. One of the dishes was really salty so we complained about that and the waitress took that away. We assumed she would come back and change it but we never heard about it again. We tried several times to get the waitress's attention and she looked at us as if to indicate that she will be with us in a minute but we were ignored.

When the bill arrived, both thalis were listed on there at full price. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she called the manager over and he explained that thalis were not discounted under the Taste London card.

I asked him where on the website it stated this, and why we were not told this when making the reservation or when placing our order. He avoided this question and kept repeating how they did not discount thalis.

He would not let either my Dad or I get a word in and was really rude and argumentative. It got to the point where I calmly told him I would leave my name, address and number and was going to walk out of there. When they would be reasonable and actually discuss the situation they could contact me and arrange payment for the meal. He then started going on about how I could not do that, and when I replied that I could and he could not stop me, he said he would call the police. I told him not to worry, as I took my phone out and started looking for the local police station, as I would call the police myself.

By this point other people in the restaurant were listening in, and a bride and groom were nearby celebrating their wedding. They too had an issue with the bill and started agreeing with the point I was trying to make. The manager then tells me not to speak to them, which I say that I can speak to whoever I like and he cannot stop me.

I then mention the incident with the salty dish, and the groom chimes in with how he found the same dish really salty too. By this point another guy had come up and was complaining about his meal.

Things were getting quite heated, and another member of staff (who I think was the manager's wife) steps in and tells him just to remove the second thali from the bill. He complains a little before doing as she said. I make a point of how I am not paying the service charge as the service was terrible and how I would never be coming there again after being spoken to in the manner that I was. She then kicks up a fuss and starts telling me how I shouldn't talk to people like that and how I should not involve other customers. I calmly told her that if she and the other manager were prepared to listen then I would not have had to raise my voice. I even proceeded to show her the Taste London website on my phone, to which she said that she didn't have time to listen to me and said she had to attend to other customers. She did however take off the service charge too before I paid the bill.

Anyways, I would recommend people steer clear of Chor Bizarre in Central London!

That sounds like terrible service, any half decent restaurant would have immediately taken it off the bill and offered some form of compensation - 25% off or a round of drinks for example.
A restaurant manager should always show respect towards their customers as it's their income and should encourage customers to come back in the future.
Also, I'm fairly sure that service charge isn't compulsory (unless the party is over a certain amount, usually 8), so I can't see why that was an issue either?

Can't say I've heard of the place but will definitely avoid, judging by yours (and other customers by the sounds of it) impressions too!

Not sure what else you can do, Watchdog?

Chor Bizarre - India's Restaurant in 16 Albemarle Street, Mayfair, London W1S 4HW (0207-6299802 & 0207-6298542).

Sounds like it lives up to its name. Chor meaning thief.

It's never compulsory, just usually added by default with larger groups. You can dispute anything on the bill, especially if you've complained about it before that point.

Is it common in London for a service charge to be included automatically?
Fair enough on parties of 6+, I've seen that everywhere but parties of 4? Madness.

Last time I went to an Indian, we had to wait for 30 minutes for a table - we went earlier in the evening and he said come back at 8 and we'll have a table - I asked him at half 8 how long it would be and he apologised and got it sorted in a few minutes. 5 minutes after sitting down he came over and offered us a couple of free beers. That's what I like.

For them to take off the second thali dish wouldnt have left them out of pocket...my youngest brother works in the food industry and he knows that they make an absolute bomb on their food ie restaurants...most of those dishes dont cost more than a couple of £'s at best.

Terrible service really though...i wouldnt have stood for that either.

Cool story bro:D

I wouldn't have got into an argument about it there and then. I would have given them my phone/address and then walked out. They could phone the police all they like, but you have not comitted any offence.

If you want to make your point I suggest you put this on as many review sites as possible. I always check reviews for restaurants before going there.

The one thing to watch out for with deals like 'Taste London' and also special discounts that are on through the likes of 'Top Table' is to always mention when you are seated at the table that, that is how you booked/intend to pay.

I've been to a few restaurants in London where the 'Top Table' deal refers to a specific menu that you have to have. In one restaurant in paticular, we worked out that for six of us, it was cheaper to have the regular menu than the specific 'deal' of the 'Top Table' one. In a way, restaurants just use the likes of 'Top Table' to get some interest.

You just have to be wary as to whether you really are getting a good deal sometimes.

Service really matters to places like that... you get good service you tend to go back again and again, bad service and you let all your friends know!

Our local indian for example has super nice staff, great food and brilliant service. Its a backstreet affair that to the casual glance looks like a dive. Clearly they dont have the money to move, but word of mouth means its always busy!

They also make sure they treat regulars well... free drink if you have to wait for a table and so on.

The dump you went to sounds like it wont be around for long if thats how they conduct business.

Good on you for not being bullied.

I also hate when they try to make you pay tips on your card as that gets taxed and not so much makes it to the people who serve you so i always try to do it seperate.

Also are you constantly repeating the place so it comes up on google or something or am i being a idiot?

This is strange as it should have been mentioned in the voucher what is and what is not included as part of the deal. I only ever used some vouchers buy 1 get 1 free at GBK and had no problems what so ever.

This was my thinking. :)

My local curry house is great, brilliant food, cheap and all the staff know us :D The owner even cooks for us sometimes, and does the odd "bonus" dish or special for us. :D Nothing like that damned awful Chor Bizarre, at all!

Chor Bizarre bad service. Bad food. Rude employees you say?

Playign with google aside, well done for standing your ground and getting a fair resolution, a lot of Brits would just have taken it lying down, so good for you.
