Hiper type R 580w to run Asus 5850 cu Top?

fishboy what res do you game at?

nice to know the type-r 580w would be enough for the 5850, thought it would be.

My first lasted nearly 3 years before it became faulty and wouldnt start any board anymore. just inside the warranty period I got myself a replacement from hiper which came in a cardboard white hiper box that said refurbished or reconditioned on it, which wasn't very reassuring but the unit looked like new and had a new manual with it, but I had to keep all my old cables from the previous model to use with the replacement (as told by hiper), but the replacement has been fine so far - since last year.

I might get an XFX psu as an upgrade, like the 650w modular version. They get good reviews.

I had a 580 type-R it worked perfectly 24/7 until i was hop swapping a floppy drive for raid drivers and shorted it over 3 pins and caused a small fire. cheekily i sent it back to hiper and they replaced it and that has been running my second rig now for for about a year or so.

I would get a newer psu tho because most of the new cards require 2 6pin power connectors and the asus directcu requires 1 6pin and 1 8pin i beleive

To be fair any good PSU would have had short circuit protection and not catch fire, that's a slight design flaw.

I had a hiper type R 580W running a core 2 duo with a 8800GTX but when I upgraded to an i5 and ATI 5870 vapor-x I decided not to take the risk with it anymore and promptly ditched it for a zalman heatpipe PSU from recommendations from here in regards to it running very quiet.. and it does..!!

If I'd read the comments about the hiper type R before I'd purchased it, I'd have never fitted it..

I only learnt of the unit being a potential bomb about 12 months into ownership... thankfully I never had a single issue with it, however was a bit scary to know I had a unit that could have blew up at anytime...

It was a shame, as the PSU looked fantastic.. Weren't they a Milton Keynes based company? Not long gone bust..!!
