FAO people who have emmigrated

i'm paying 13% of my salary (forced) into a public pension fund which I can only dream will pay out... depending on the whims of the MEPs in charge at the time might as well put 350 euro on the lottery each week works out the same cept I don't have a choice. :(

The private pension schemes over here as in the UK are based on income tax deductions but since I don't pay national income tax they are more or less useless for me.... :(
Why don't you pay income tax?

I don't even get a pension scheme. The joys of being self-employed in Belgium I suppose :p

The winking smiley doesn't stop this from being an asinine comment.

Most of the ex-pats I know have kept a public/private pension scheme in the UK, started a public/private scheme here, as well as the normal investments, savings etc. It's no different.

Yes it is, because tonight when they go out for a beer they'll give the £3 to a foreign business, who will probably spend it on foreign goods, rather than a British business, who would probably spend it on British goods.

Simples!

Really, that's all you've got? Don't emigrate because that's unpatriotic - British pounds for British business!

Seriously?

Just proving you wrong, that's all. Spending your money in Spain is not as good for British business as spending your money within British business. You suggested it is not different. Clearly you are .. ahem .. mistaken. It is clearly different. :/

You have a very blinkered and inaccurate world view.

Incidentally, I was talking about saving money, not spending it; the thread is about retirement plans. You did read the thread, right?

If you start a savings investment abroad rather than England, it is likely a larger percentage of that fund will be invested in non-UK companies rather than UK companies.

This will make UK companies struggle more as they have less money to invest and will struggle more to grow.

This will hurt England. As in, me. And the guy who lives next door to me. In fact some UK people will be laid off because the company now does not have enough money to keep them on. So THEY won't have any money to spend on other British businesses, so THOSE British businesses won't have as much money to spend .. ad nauseum ..

In many other countries, especially America and Japan, they try and protect their countries - to support them. In England it seems to be 'screw my country and the greater good, I'm in it for number #1'. Just a pity, that's all .. I'm all up for free markets - but just dragging all the money away from the UK after the UK's opportunities/education made it POSSIBLE to get the money in the first place (and 'abroad' did precisely NOTHING for the money) - well, just doesn't seem like cricket to me ..

Your theory seems to be, more people = more money for me? What about people who immigrate to the UK, more money for you? Wouldn't these people balance out the poms who go abroad and have a pension fund there?

Bloody emmigrants, going there, stealing our wealth (?)

britboy, i wasn't asking what you are getting at. i wanted to know what expats will do when they are no longer getting an income

Ah, I see. Those who emigrate are being selfish because it will hurt you.

No further questions.

Yup. We're all required to see out our lives on this muddy little island because it would hurt the factory workers of the grey north.

I wonder if we're being 'unpatriotic' if we spend money whilst on foreign holidays. I mean, coulda spennt on Brritish bizness innit guv?

Indeed immigrants do balance it out somewhat. Normally they get a complete education from abroad or pay for it here (so 100% free to us), then come over and work here for super-duper cheap, paying their taxes and earning money for the country.

And of course we all end up with cheaper goods and a higher standard of life, better services etc.

But don't tell the Daily Mail readers that ;)

This is exactly what many people don't see.

I work for the EU my income tax is paid back to EU member states not one single territory.

It starts at 8% and goes up to 40%. (There is no amount which is tax free unlike the UK) However there are no private pension schemes out there that really work for me due to the fact that Belgian pension payments are tax deductable so are created in such a way as to benefit those that pay Belgian taxes.
