One of the lads in the office is after a new car. He wants it to be:

Bigger than Focus/Astra/Leon
2002/02 or newer
~35mpg combined
£3k max

These are the things that are pretty fixed, but it doesn't matter about other details such as estate/saloon/hatch for example. Obviously the better equipped the better.

The only things that immediately come to mind are the obvious Mondeo and the Accord. I'd really appreciate a few views on the pros and cons of each or other suggestions with pros and cons for them too.

Cheers

1.9 TDi Passat? Can get 2002 examples for around £2.5K now. If not then I would go for a Mondeo.

You can pick up Mondy TDCi with lowish mileage and 02/03... I have been looking for the exact same thing as of late and it always comes back to the mondy.. Did see some newer shape Vectra and a lot of lagunas for about that money but in my opinion the mondy looked and drove better than both of them..

Some useful stuff there, thanks guys.

Would a vectra be worth a go or are they just awful? I've had an irrational hatred of the newer shape vectras without having even sat in one let alone drive one. Thankfully he's not mentioned the laguna, so I'm certainly not bringing that up! Aren't they a minefield of awfulness?

I don't think the Vectras are that bad, a friend of mine has one a similar age as my Mondeo, its a 2.2 one and drives reasonably well whilst managing to be comfortable. It does mechanically feel more "aged", certainly more so than the Mondeo, although could be a bad example - he paid £2100 for is 2002 one and hasn't had to spend a penny on it in the year he's had it.

the vectra is actually probably a nicer car than a MKIII mondeo if you only drive it at 70+ in a straight line, less wind noise and slightly smoother ride. However if you ever go round corners your better off with a Mondeo!

blah blah. typycal OMG vauxhall, go buy a focus/mondeo.

while I do agree that if pushed really hard the mondeo would handle sharply, does it really matters on this type of car? We're talking rather big diesel cars with around 130bhp, if you're buying one to push it hard around corners every day then you're looking at the wrong car.

we're not comparing a vectra b with an elise here, we're comparing a vectra c with a mondeo, in everyday driving there won't be any bloody difference at all in terms of cornering ability. Heck even if pushed hard, the difference will be barely noticeable. there's plenty vectras 1.9cdti's to choose from, have a look around, sit in and test drive one, it's a car with great value for money in this price bracket.
