Buying a car on Friday - Can I just put it on my debit card?

Just use it as normal imo, if you do run into problems then it's easily sorted with a quick phone call on the day.

Also, pics when you get it please, else I'll shoot you with my glock!*

I bougt my 5 series on debit card and called the bank first to make sure the unusual spending would not get it flagged - no harm doing that.

its surprising how easily the bank will hand over an authorisation code for a 5 figure sum with surprisingly little questions asked ! i.e. none.

Same here. I bought the CTR and Boxster on my debit card. Just put in my PIN and that was it, no other checks at all.

At a guess I would say stolen cards rarely spend thousands on a car, most probably withdraw as much cash as possible or go and buy expensive electronics etc. Big transactions like cars are probably quite low risk

Enjoy the new car, certainly going to be an upgrade!

Nice upgrade :)

Yeah debit card will be fine. As to whether the bank need to be told first, it depends on the bank. I'm buying a car on Saturday and will be telling them first to avoid unnecessary faffing; just a quick call to say "I'm buying a car from xx dealer on {day}, just letting you know it's legit so you don't block it" should be all that's needed :)

First one I bought on card required a quick phone call but the second went through no problems. I don't see the point in phoning the bank first really.

My bank profile your spending habits, stuff way out of profile they'll block occasionally.

I had it the first time I used my card online, and a few bloody times whilst I was in Tunisia.

I paid for mine on my debit card. No need to talk to the bank.

The transaction was blocked and 5 seconds later the bank rang the traders phone, then 10 seconds later the bank rang my mobile too.

Just had to confirm a few things and try again and all was fine.

or make a 30 second phone call beforehand instead - hardly a major thing

you blatently dont spend enough on your debit card.

Not bragging, but the VXR was paid on card, for a 5 figure sum, it just went straight through for me.

They only block it as suspicious if you dont usually spend much money.

I put £3000 on my debit card when I bought my car. That went through okay, but then I was refused for petrol later that day.

Actually I would go so far as to say his bank did a good job and yours didn't. I'm willing to bet you don't spend 5 figure sums in one transaction every week. Nothing wrong with a bank protecting your interests for the sake of 30 secs of your time. Having had two occasions where several thousand has been pinched from my account in a transaction I would have appreciated my bank being a bit more on the ball. (clearly got money back but had to notice myself first)

i pay for all my cars via bank card.

First car i bought required manual authorisation. Not since.

We also put holidays and stuff on there as well, so it all adds to the spending profile.

I payed for my last car using my debit card and did not bother letting the bank know, money left my bank no problem. Though when I payed for a garage repair using my debit card a few months later which was only for £150 the bank insantly put a stop on my card and I did not find out until 3 days later when I tried to pay for an item on ebay through paypal and it kept rejecting my card, rang my bank up and then I was told about this stop as the £150 that went out for the garage repair was classed as a "very unusual" transaction by there system and put a stop just incase my card had been stolen... I found it amusing that this stop was not put in place on my card when I payed £2600 upfront for the car before

yep, I imagine most people who are not complete ****** do the same. My point was if a bank flags a £20+k transaction costing a few seconds of your time, they are just doing a good job.
