Rights to ingame buildings.

You would need to speak to an intellectual property lawyer (i know one if you are sufficiently mental to go ahead with this) - I would imagine if this is just a geek wanting to live out some elf fantasy there would be no issue and the games company would probably eek out a few column inches of PR driven 'news' about this. if you had any intention to profit from it, quite a different proposition and then you would need to buy the rights.

If you ever needed proof that the Catholic Church was insane there it is. How on earth did they think they could claim copyright infringement when the architect died 500 years ago?

To be fair, it's a Church of England Church which is in no way associated with the Catholic Church :p

Considering how tall some tower blocks are getting, it might be sooner than we think :P.

It would be awesome to live in an apartment building designed like the citadel though :p You could even do a little model town around it like city 17 :P.

/geek mode off.

Have you seen the Hilton in Manchester? It isn't far off imo.

Interesting question actually. Designs in a computer game would be automatically be protected by copyright and possibly design rights. So to create a structure that very closely copied an in game design would be an infringement of some sort.

No issues unless you're attempting to sell the object commercially. You'd be building it as a tribute, and I have a feeling Valve might quite enjoy it!

Tbh i'd have thought any copyright to any content in a video game would be in the hands of the publisher or developers (depending upon what was agreed upon between the two).

I would imagine it all depends upon how far you would go If you were to copy a design exactly or pretty damn close(a building that looks like the citadel, or the death star for instance) so that there is no doubt upon what it is based on, and then profit off of it, they'd probably bust you for using their material. Renting said hypothetical buildings out for money for instance.

Although if you're just a pretty die hard fan (like the star trek dude with those rooms) and aren't making profit it would be acceptable i would imagine. As has been said, more publicity for them.

also @ bsoltan that image is dying to be put through photoshop. :p

All of this talk reminds me of the guy who did a treehouse based on the Mad Cat from mechwarrior. So awesome. The hours of fun that would have given me as a young kid :D

Hmm tough choice.

Temple of Nod from C&C.. or how about something random like the Refinery, lol.

Or one of the huge cannons from Total Annihilation.

Considering how edgy the government are on that sort of stuff, i think they might take note of a massive gun emplacement popping up :p. Even if it is an imitation.

Loving the C&C references. I do think the Temple of Nod rules though. I'm gonna take over the world.

But Nah, I've not got too much money at all, I'm probably poorer than anyone else on this forum. It's just a situational thought, and I wasn't sure of the consequences.

Well what Goldy mentioned. I thought that would be applied to any in game material and would be protected from such things.

(btw, this isn't something i'm going to try and complete etc, it's just a random situation that popped into my head ;])
