360 "slim" and natal to be called Kinect?

I am so glad I waited for E3. I was on the brink of buying a 360 a few months ago but held off after someone told me to wait for e3 as they might have a new design or something.

Who ever said that to me, god bless you. :D

Will pick this up day one. Still need to play Gears 2 and Fable 2 and Shadow Complex and what ever else I've missed on the 360 since mid 2007. Just not looking forward to the avatar dash board rubbish. Do I really need to create a goofy looking avatar when I first sign in?

Just accept the default one, it takes 1 button push..

What is it with all these self concious people these days.. can't have an avatar, can't be seen moving their arms/legs in the privacy of their own home, bunch of poofta's. :D

If I don't see blood, gore, boobies and other manly things I started to question myself. Happens on a daily basis.

I'm not insecure though. Not one bit.

I did find it a bit annoying that you can't just opt-out of the stupid avatar thing, but as said, it only takes a moment to just accept whatever crap thing it defaults on and then you're good to go.

The more i read about kinect the more i feel its failed to be anywhere close to what i though it would be. At present some of the issues Ive heard about kinda worry me, such as;
Lag
2 player tracking max
can only work standing
no object scanning
accuracy
the dash looks very limited and no where close to minority report or something close to the average touch screen.
Hopefully some of these will be addressed, but i think it will be too late for the launch games, i still think an extra year dev time would have done wonders for it.

THe one good thing I can see about this is the media aspects, scrolling through your movie collection with a wave of your hands, telling it to play the movie, etc etc.

There is more benefits than just games with this new technology. IMO.

That sounds like a nightmare tbh.

I am on the couch watching a movie, move my hand 6 inches over, get remote and scan forward, reverse, stop, play, pause etc.
Or stand up and start moving my arms around to scroll etc. I thought we moved away from getting up and expelling energy doing things like that in the 80's when we got remote controls :p

And as for voice recognition, it better be a hell of a lot better than MS Sync. lol

I am assuming that since MS licence the tech and no doubt lots of software from Primesense and they demo media control whilst sat down, I have more confidence MS will have that aspect working fine by launch..

The rest of it, well it's really odd, 150ms+ of lag, 2 players, and lets assume most games will require standing, you'd think the press would have been slamming it as a total fail, after all people quickly notice lag, people can easily quantify 4 players is more then 2 players etc, yet the press seem to be largely welcoming kinect as a being decent, saying 'it just works'.. which is so at odds with all the negativity flying around about it.

I'd like to have a go on it before thinking of purchasing, just to see what on earth could make the press not call it an instant failure...

The more I see and hear about Kinect the more I am totally unconvinced by it.

Navigating the menu using gestures? Watching and pausing a movie using gestures? A gimic people. You will go back to using a remote within days. Why? because it works. It does not need replacing.

As for the games? I will eat my joypad if anything of note comes out. In that I mean anything other than a party game. I seriously do not think that Kinect can bring anything to complex game play mechanics. Any mildly hardcore game will need a controller, so how the hell are they going to integrate Kinect when your hands are tied up with that? Someone mentioned your body movements for a cover mechanic? How tiring and awkward will that get before you switch it back to the joypad alternative?

As for the console redesign - wtf?!?!? This is purely a case of 'ooo shiny new'. For those without a 360 - fine. But for those with one, why would you spend your money trading or buying new; a product which you already own?

I really think that, on hardware, Microsoft are weak this year. I think that they have realised that Kinect will not be as strong or innovative a product as they originally thought, but they had spent to much money on it and shouted about it to early to can anything. I think that to keep the money rolling in they have come up with a very quick console redesign and are now going to set about convincing you that you need one. I know that they are a business that needs to make more and more money but it really is pitiful. they should be concentrating and investing in games and the next gen tech instead of this.

Essentially, this year MS have created two products that the world does not need. Please feel free to convince me otherwise.

I am not baiting, these are my thoughts on this. I own both a 360 and PS3, and prefer the 360 for gaming due to the pad and LIVE. I am certainly not a Sony fanboy.

Not sure if it got posted, but I found noise comparison which was pretty good:

Around 3:52 is good, it constantly switches from slim and non-slim when under load. Some weird vibration noises I found with the slim, maybe just the way the guy had it standing. Still has that really annoying *CLUNK* noise when it's accessing the drive.

That video is the first time I've seen them stacked. Why the hell is it called a slim, it's an inch thinner in width, seriously why bother?

It's hardly slim.

Yeah slim was just the name given to it by the Internet :) It's not really that much slimmer, but smaller maybe, that's about it.

Without having seen the Kinect Forza demo...
This isn't another "invisible steering wheel" concepts is it?

Assuming it is... With no wheel return, feedback or resistance. Why bother?

The only thing I've liked the sound of so far is games where I can turn my head slightly and character looks that way... Even then it's only so much use.

But then you won't looking at the telly?

One of the community managers for Turn 10 says the Forza Kinect demo works fine sitting down. It seems that this is a bit of fuss about nothing.

Funny that most other devs has said it cant, and MS have said it doesnt at the moment, i expect it was che again spreading lies. Think i heard it on one of the E3 podcasts that someone wanted to sit on a chair and was told that it wont work, something to do with it needing to scan the whole body upright from head to toe.
