she's in the 25-30 age range and wants to spend about £5-6k, but not on a corsa/fiesta size car. She'd prefer something more focus size, and 4/5 doors is a must.

She wanted an Audi and was looking at A6s and A3s. Are these cars a good idea at this price? higher miles and ~5-10 years old.

Obvious alternative is a focus which she also likes the look of.

I've suggested Seats/skodas/VWs, all of which are a definite no from her.

So she's 29 then? ;)

An A6 is NOT a Focus sized car or indeed anywhere near a Focus sized car, it is almost 5 metres long and is an executive saloon. I'd say neither is a good choice really unless you particularly like this brand and are prepared to shell out higher running and repair costs in order to have one - as you've identified they are all older cars.

I'd stick with a Mk2 Focus for this sort of money. Tidy, modern, reliable and respectable.

Yep can get a decent model Focus for that money. Plenty on the market so can be picky too.

I don't think you will get a very good car for a fiver.

apart from the performance/economy tradeoff, is there much of a difference between engines? opinions on diesel and petrol welcome.
