Cleaning of thermal paste

Simple question, what do i need to do it with, ive cotton buds and a tap. But I wouldnt have thought water was good near a CPU

What do i need and where can i get it

Either get hold of some Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) from your chemist or use something like Tim Clean .

Don't need another thread on this, the answer is something specific like brought from OcUK / computer shop or Isopropyl Alcohol from a chemist.

Use either isopropyl alcohol or white spirit with the cotton buds.

Before I got the ArctiClean stuff I use the Medical Wipes, quick drying etc always worked good I think a mate once recommended nail varnish remover though never used it though.

im basicly looking for a solvent based cleaner then, hows about optical wipes?

be careful of things like nail polish remover etc as they leave a residue due to extra ingredients, always use the proper stuff

^^ +1 i have tried using my girlfriends nail polish remover, not a good idea it leaves a dull finish.

I tried 3 chemists in newcastle all said they were no longer allowed to carry IPA.

To be honest there's probably tons of stuff around the house you could use, i think the surface cleaner is a bit of a rip off.

You can get IPA on the bay for about £5/litre. White Spirit is a bad idea, it's a paraffin and will leave an oily residue.

I use a bottle of cd cleaning fluid that contains ipa, this and a lint free cloth does a decent job.

When I first took my E6600 out and scraped the paste off I thought "ahh not much more could be on that" used the first thing I was shocked at what was on the cloth after

high street electronic component store. cant name them as it breaches the rules. IPA 170 comes in spray cans or bottles. its basically tim clean without the nice scent. cheaper on the bay though, get the 99+% pure one.. i also use it as fuel for a pressure stove

I use Acetone along with a glasses cleaning cloth. Works a treat and cheap as chips to buy
