Started my new job in May and car sharing the other half's E46 325i just isn't working out.

I love driving it, got a nice bit of poke and a lovely noise :D she isn't taken on it as feels it is too large and it's coming up for 10 years old too. To combine the fact that we now have other commitments requiring us to have two cars, we need to change the arrangement.

So, the plan is to flog the E46 and downsize hers to something Clio/Golf/1 series-esque while I go out and get something too.

I do literally 5k miles a year, next to nothing! So a diesel is out of the equation. I have set a budget of 15k for the car at the absolute max, which would leave me plenty for maintenance etc etc. Looking on Pistonheads it seems I can get a nice 330i E90 for that budget, which quite tickles my fancy.

BUT....I have the urge to get something totally impractical out of my system before we have kids and I have to get an estate with wipe clean seats! I'm thinking Z4, Boxster, TT, 350z, E46 M3....

So, given my mileage the only other real requirements are for it to be comfy enough for the odd 3 hour motorway cruise and not have huge spoilers/bodykits any other cars to consider in that price bracket?

Thanks for any input!

If you can afford the frankly stupid running costs (£700 for a service, fun fun) then buy an E46 M3 for a bit before they are all old and crap.

Either that or a Boxster, something memorable before the kids set in.

I had forgotten how utterly awesome the e46 m3 was until earlier when I saw a black cabrio with red leather. Sexual excitement set in slightly

Was in the car with my dad the other day on the motorway and a Blue E46 was cutting everyone up , I didn't care though the noise was just :D :p AWESOME. My dream car , One day maybe.

If I went for the M3 that had just had its Inspection II I should be good for a while before even the oil service on 5k a year or do they have lower service intervals?

Is there not a time limitation as well - normally annual or 18 month servicing if you're doing less than the mileage limit?

Yep, afaik its a service every 15k miles, so if you have inspection 2, 15k more miles until oil change.

15k is merely the base from which the calculations are made - in practice it will be about 10-12k if you do low mileage short trips and only 15k or more if you spend a lot of time doing long trips.

It's calculated based on fuel used. Drive everywhere at 20mpg and you'll need a service quicker than driving everywhere at 30mpg.
