Tatoos and Jobs

I have a tattoo on my forearm and have no problem with it and I'm visiting customers most of the time, although as I wear a suit for work it's not much of a bother as it's hidden. When I'm in the office nobody is bothered, it helps when the MD has one near his wrist :D

I don't suspect that tattoos will be the first thing that prospective employers will worry about.

Serious answer - My ex had a fair few visible tats, she's doing fine working at HMV.

as long as its not visable when in normal clothes it will not matter, but if its a skull and cross bones on your face not many people will employee you..

I am an employer and I personally do not like tats at all, however I have had to employ people with them. If they are excessive or I do not like them then I will not offer a job. Now that its summer I am finding more of my emplyees have tats and it seem to be very common. Especially ammongst women. The one they get across their lower back is a very common.

I doubt in this day that anyone would look down on them unless they were of swastikas ect all over your face. I mean virtually everyone has a tattoo these days...

As stated, it depends on the employer and the field of work. I work in software and know people earning six figures a year with large tattoos. It's sensible to get them in places easily covered up no matter what your field of work is though, just in-case you come across that one employer who really hates them.

"Doing fine" and "working at HMV" doesn't really sell it tbh.

I would say it totally depend what industy you are in and what your prospective career will be.

I have a tattoo at the top of each arm and have had no issues getting jobs as an accountant or as a lecturer. In fact when I was an accountant I had facial piercings but took them out when I moved to Norfolk as they don't like that kind of thing :p

I've got a full sleeve on one arm and two largeish pieces on my other forearm, as well as a half back piece, writing across my collarbones and one on the back of my leg. Never had any problems. I've worked in design artrooms, a bank, a few retail jobs.

If it's the sort of job where you were shirt and tie, they're covered, if it's a job where you wear a t-shirt, it's reasonably likely that they won't mind.

There's jobs in the middle though - where you wear short sleeves but they might worry about them. I went for one job where it was reasonably smart attire but short sleeves, and the interviewer noticed them peeking out and said something, I don't think he liked them much. I didn't get the job, but however a friend of mine got one of the positions and he has tattoos on his forearms, so I don't think me not getting the job was down to my tattoos.

I had an interview recently as well where the interviewer spotted them and asked to see them, so I showed him. I've got a second interview lined up so apparently it didn't fuss him. That was car sales.

So in summary - these days, in my opinion, you're unlikely to have problems if you keep it inside your cuffs. They're certainly becoming more common and more tolerated even by slightly old fashioned people. I think they're just coming around to this being how it is and ignoring it, even if they don't much like it.

Interestingly I never get negative comments from customers, even posh ones. 99% of people say nothing, oiky types like me will often talk to me about them, and a few little old ladies have asked me what I've done to myself. A lady I used to teach always used to tell me off, bless her :D

No one even mentions the gaping hole in one of my earlobes since I took out my tunnels. I suppose they either don't notice it or don't know what it is so don't say anything. Only one person has ever said anything. She stopped while she was talking to me and leant over, then just said 'what's wrong with your ear?'

There are very few employers who will take umbridge to non-visible tattoos as they are unlikely to know until you reveal them (if ever), tattoos which are visible when wearing a long sleeve shirt are usually ill advised, depends on the career path you want to follow but you could be closing several doors on yourself if you do.
Even if your employers aren't bothered unless you're never going to be seen by a customer then their clients might take offence to them. It's daft, and I think probably something which will have gone almost completely in the next 10-20 years, but that's how it is.
I only have one on my forearm but I frequently wear tshirts/short sleeves, in a meeting our Director asked me about it as he was sat next to me, just seemed to be interested though.

I can understand a few little meaningful tattoos but sleeves and patterns are just daft, you're gonna look like a complete scummer when you get a bit older.
Walk around asda on weekday afternoon, you'll see what I mean.

Depends where you work but yes a lot of employers will either get a bad impression and not hire you or ask you to cover them up.

Non-managerial, low end career jobs.

No offence but those aren't the sort of jobs tattoos will stop you from getting.

I agree that they shouldn't be seen but for the majority of jobs I have seen forearms are still a no no, as is neck.

Generally it is up to the employers and your role. My rule is that if its office based professional (eg. accounting, banking, IT, law) then only have tatts you know you can cover up. I've a large one on my left calf but I wear trousers to work as an IT manager.

Some employers a fine with piercings and tattoos, a mate of mine is a website designer for a advertising/design firm in Soho London. He's got full sleeves and piercings everywhere and his work is fine with that as he doesn't face customers.

In the end it is a matter of making a choice and then living with the consequences bad and good.

I have a tattoo on my wrist. Ages back when I applied for a job in this hotel (well posh 5-star tbf), I spoke to the manager in there for a while and he said there are a few positions available etc. and he is interviewing in 2 weeks so will give me a call. As I shook his land to leave he looked down at my wrist and clearly saw my tattoo. Two weeks later I receive a letter stating that they don't have any positions available. TBF he may have just not liked me or my CV.

I just wear a watch over it now if I think it will be a problem.
