NS1000 worth it?

The sound of these with the FIIO and the DX card in dolby headphone mode with noise cancellation on and the bass boost off on the fiio is amazing for 65 quid, which is the total cost without the dx card.

I knew marsman and uriel would be lurking in this thread! They sound great in passive mode with the essence soundcard on a high gain setting. Uriel is correct about needing your ears testing if you cant hear anything different when noise cancelling is turned on. It definately adds a slight high pitched "shhhhhhhhhhh" type sound.

With correct gain from soundcard/amplifier you cant really tell the difference when noise cancelling is on or off. I though it was better off

yes it fixes it and you aren't getting the full benefit if you are plugging them in to a speaker headphone out

Could you explain how I can get the full benefit then? Plug them into the green port in the back of my PC? I just have onboard sound so I doubt I can get full benefit anyway.

They have gone up to £60 and are now marked as a sale item, so im dubious to whetehr they will ever come back to £50.. are they still worth it at £50?.. sorry to revive an old thread..

Still amazed with the NS1000s quality and value when I bought them for £50.
Still going strong months on. I don't use the noise-cancellation as I rarely need it tbh, but it's a nice feature that works to an extent.

If these were to fail, I would most definitely buy again.

I must be the only person on the planet that hated them :p

Not really. If you hear them inadequately amped in passive mode that might be a deal breaker (they sound muddy and bloated). So might the hiss with ANR on. So might squeaky hinges, but that's never been a problem with mine.

Oh don't get me wrong they didn't sound bad for £50 with the ANR on, (infact very good), but I did have a problem with squeaky hinges which ruined anything good they did.
I couldn't stand them running passively, even through I had them running through a HiFiMan EF2A (which drives my HD600's currently with ease).

I also wasn't a fan of how much plastic was used in the construction either.

I think they sound far better through even the e5 volume booster than the onboard and mine creeked a bit too but it goes after a while.
Just because one amp drives something else well doesn't mean they will drive these.
For the sake of £10-£15 at least worth trying them with the e5 certainly sound better than grado sr60i and goldring dr150 two of the best other headphones in it's price range.

Yeah. I too have HD600s and several amps that are fine with them are awful with the NS1000s in passive mode.

I'd guess they need more current and less voltage swing than the HD600s.

Trouble is most amps are designed for very high or very low impedance headphones. The NS1000s are somewhere in the middle.

I tried them with a CMOY and another headphone amp I can't quite remember the name of.

Either way, I got rid of the for the price I paid, so no realy loss in having a listen when I had the chance. More than happy with my AT ES7's as my portable closed cans.
