I bought a i7 980x and rampage extreme 3, whit corsair dominator gt 2000mhz c7, and i cant get it stable in prime whit 4,6ghz and memory running at rated speed. I been trying for several days getting really sad i see a lot of people running at that speed, can some nice pro overclocker maybe assist me, maybe some1 whit knowledge whit this motherboard, there is some many things you can ajust. Im a noob at this

Can I suggest you list your current settings please?

Knowing your temps too will help a lot. Also, what is your current cooling etc?

So many questions! :D

EDIT: Sorry, didnt see the Liquid Cooling in your sig, what sort of Water cooling setup are you using?

firstly

temps, you are running two 120.3 radiators, a good start but i would have chosen a quad for trisli 480 and the chipset
also, noctua NFp12 fans [at a glance] not the greatest of fans for a radiator. you would be getting far better temps off sharkoons or similar

we need to see your load temps before we can comment properly - put the system on furmark multi GPU and prime - screenshots would be dead helpful, then we can judge the headroom we have to play with [if any]

lets see a proper overclock. your board is capable of massive baseclock so you should be starting at 200 at the very least.

just because you have an unlocked multi doesnt mean you need to utilise it too much. multi clocking is poor with such a good set of components [i wont discuss your case choice]

200bclk will give you the nice memory dividers, 1600, 2000 etc - choose the one that your memory will run at.

leave your ram timings at 9-9-9-24 until you get the chip stable, then thrash them down to 8-8-8-20 or whatever you can get them to. [most 2000mhz GT i have used will do 7-7-7-18]

are you leaving LLC on auto? all rampage III extremes i have used tend to assume auto means level2 LLC and overvolt the chip LOTS
asus in their infinate wisdom assure me that the voltage readout in CPUz is not correct and that i need a volt meter to read the voltages
shame no other X58 motherboard on the planet requires anything other than CPUz to read Vcore.

you wont have to worry about the shambolic chipset cooling either as it looks like you have chipset blocks, a wise choice.

the fact that you are stable at 4.5 is fairly good. i would refine this for 24/7 use as long as your temps are ok.
not really much point in pushing for higher on an every day clock, i could give you settings getting to 5GHz+ but the chip wont last long.

i suggest using LinX to stress the overclock, a 20000 run on that should clarify stability

dont go above 1.375 on your chips vcore. i did and now my 980X doesnt overclock past 4GHz [mine is a very early sample though, never dared try it on a retail]

you need to list your temps.

i took my chip to 5ghz and it ran wprime, it got to 80'c+ across the cores. that is with a Quad and a Double radiator in the loop in my system

Sorry kinda a noob at this overclocking LLC? dont know what it is? my temps when i prime is it peaks at 60, but its around 55-60, btw thank you so much for taking the time to help me. i been trying yesterday and today to get 23 x 200 cuz then i also have the memory at the rated speed. but its hard so many things to ajust voltage, frek and so on. Her toy can look at this this is my last try as close i can get on my own http://s1012.photobucket.com/albums/af249/HenrikPlum/?action=view&current=Billede024.jpg

But i have no trouble in my gpu chipset loop its running 876/2200 all 3 cards whit the chipset temps are top card 48, middle 52, bottom 47, thats going through 3d mark vantage. so no trouble there. im working on getting some pictures from the bios.

BTW nice rig you got there Rjkoneill

Ohh do you mean LLC = load line clibration?

load line calibration is LLC yes

you have a bit of voltage headroom on the QPI/DRAM voltage - you can take that up to 1.375 without issues. just keep your eyes on temperatures.

your IOH and ICH pcie voltages can be left on auto.

i wouldnt go much past 1.375v on the vcore.
using a lower multi should in theory reduce your vcore requirements

by the way

are you really running TRISLI 480s on a 1080p res?

yea you think its overkill right? The new dx11 games are very demanding if you want everything maxed out. besides im going to get 2 screens more when my wallet allows me, just spend a small fortune on this rig.

not knocking it chief

my 5870 runs 1920X1200 on every DX11 game maxed out

just wondered if you were planning on buying a 30" monitor to make the 480s worth bothering with

I think he would have been better off getting an overclocked bundle from oc. im sure they would have easily got it up to desired speeds.

#8 so you can play bfbc2 32x 16x whit 60+ in frames i would like to se that. And metro to, so you alone can play everything maxed out i dont think so

Why is that so hard to believe? Hardware seems to be improving faster then game engines right now and so you dont need the best and latest hardware to run everything on max.

I do personally think that TRISLI on 1080 is overkill, but as long as your happy with your setup I wouldnt worry about what others say about your system or their own to be honest.

as i am the person who overclocks bundles and systems for OCUK, i would have to point out the following

we offer 4.2 commercially as EVERY 980x will do that speed easily

4.4 is achievable on nearly every 980X but requires a bit of skill

4.5 is about the max you can go [average] on water without it being chilled

4.6 or more is just asking for extra heat/powerdraw for minimal gains. sure if you want to go to 5ghz and break records then fine. but do this if you are an experienced overclocker as the only thing that will be getting broken is your CPU

the settings i gave the user were conservative for a reason. he is pushing speeds that require enough voltage to break/degrade the chip whilst openly admitting that he is new to overclocking.
i am trying to save him the heartache of bricking an £800 CPU

like i said

i play BC2 at 1900X1200 [marginally bigger res than you] at full AA full AF everything on max bar HBAO and it runs at 60+

with my second 5870 it is 100+

i dont need my second 5870 for 1900X1200 but i have it anyway.

not too hard to believe.

as i said before im not knocking your rig, you came on here asking for advice on getting £2k+ worth of hardware up to stupid speeds then openly admitting that you dont know how to overclock. i offered advice because i can guarantee i will be one of the few users on here with access to that kind of hardware with enough experience to give you an informed opinion and constructive advice.

if you want to get defensive because i questioned your requirement for tri sli GTX480s to run on a 1080p res then be my guest, i was merely enquiring.
