Advice for joining The Police

I need help making my mind up.

I have always wanted to join the police force, ESPECIALLY in the IT side of things.
I really enjoy my current job so don't want to give that up just yet, so do I join as a volenteer for a while, then apply to be a full time copper, THEN work my way into the IT side of things as there are no jobs going in that field at the moment, or do I just wait?

Would being a volenteer be pointless?

What's people's views?

By "IT side" do you mean forensic computing, or just running the computers? In both cases you are far better off as a civilian. In the latter case I would imagine that all the work is now civilianised, and in the former you earn far more as a civilian computer forensicator.

I have friends who are black and who are gay and they are in the police force, but no, im neither, and it has nothing to do with my skin colour or race...

Of course there are black policemen. There will also be gays but they might not have announced it.

IT in the police is almost invariably civilian so becoming a copper is not a very good way in to IT

SOCO (our version of CSI) is also pretty much civilian only as well.

There are exceptions but not many.

Volunteering is never pointless, it will make you somewhat more employable and you might enjoy yourself whilst your at it. Please don't just do it for your C.V. though, it's a recipe for you getting bored.

As poeple have said you need to define what you mean by i.t.

The above is not real! Ignore all (well most of) CSI computer related nonsense. Even the fancy matrix type backgrounds when doing searches wouldnt exist.
