God I am such a loser.

I was planning on getting a iphone 4g, selling it on ebay and sticking with my brick of a phone as they really don't inspire me. Needless to say that an evening of browing various websites has changed my mind.

I realise that this is kinda rehashing discussion but I was wondering what people were leaning towards in this match up.

I was about to list what I would use the phone for but I guess calling and texting aint really that demanding. As I have never had a good new phone i don't really know what to expect!

Any general comments would be appreciated

Thanks
Mike

Oh and P.S. Is there any chance of getting either of these on a £25 a month contract? Maybe £30?

P.P.S What websites do people use for their contracts? Are there any that offer criminally cheap deals that undercut the big boys but are just less well known?

Galaxy S = best Android hardware on the market.
HTC HD2 = nice hardware, ruined by a rubbish OS.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys.

I'll wait for a few more people's comments and figure ill go for the Samsung Galaxy S (peer pressure :D). Whats the cheapest people can find it and where from. I'm with carphonewarehouse and I must say their service has been impecable for the last three years however I have no loyalty!

Sim free from a shop that used to just sell CD/DVDs and now seems to sell lots of things so i'm not sure i can link to it.. but it's £449 from them, and then 4% cashback via topcashback.co.uk

In your oppinion. ;)

To the OP, go and have a play with both in store and see which you prefer.

As by the look of things you want a big screen also check out the Desire and Xperia X10.

HD2, Desire and X10 should be easier to get cheaper deals on as they have already been out awhile.

I know the Desire and HD2 can be had for £25 per month on 18 month contracts if you shop around with the handset for free.

I haven't checked out X10 or Galaxy S prices as much but cheapest I have seen so far is £30 per month on a 24 month contract.

Um, the Desire has a smaller screen than the Galaxy S and X10 (both are 4.0), and the Galaxy S has a Super AMOLED screen which is by far the best available.

You really cannot compare the HD2 with the Desire and Galaxy S.

Other than the fact the screen is slightly bigger (thus making the phone more of a brick which many people dislike), it is worse in every single way.

Older hardware, no LED screen though it is marginally bigger. Absolutely rubbish software compared to Android, nobody would prefer WinMo over 2.1/2.2 Android surely?

As I said before, you cannot compare the HD2 with the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S beats it hands down. No questions asked.

in most peoples opinions really though eh!

screen size.. the desire is 3.7", the X10 is 4" and the Galaxy S is 4". The Galaxy S screen is also super AMOLED.. and is much better than that of the of the desire and is also better than the X10 screen.

I was referring to the comment about the OS, not the hardware as you stated the hardware was decent.

The OP is comparing the HD2 and the Galaxy S.

I agree, the hardware in the Galaxy S slaughters the HD2, however as the OP has stated already that his previous phone is a "brick" he may find that he is happy with a HD2 if he gets on with winmo (shocking but some people actually do like it!).

X10 and Desire although both inferior hardware wise to the Galaxy S are still both contenders and shouldn't be ruled out as alternatives especially if the OP decides he wishes to save money on line rental or wants a shorter contract.

You can't always purely choose a phone on specs, I know from past experience of my own and other peoples that quite often when you go and actually play with the phone in the flesh you can find that you don't actually like it (not always but can happen.).

This is why I also advised the OP to go and actually play with them in store so he can decide for himself.

I keep forgetting though, I should adopt an automatic response for this forum and simply just post "Buy the android one".

I didn't suggest he buy a phone based purely on specs, I was just pointing them out.

I would say that for most people, the Desire would be the better option due to the Sense UI.

Not everyone wants to be rooting and faffing about and the Desire works very well out of the box, the Galaxy is far less polished.

Your options for a phone these days boil down to Android, Blackberry or iPhone. Maemo and the N900 is a pretty big no go for various reasons unless you need an N900 for something special that only it can do.

Symbian and its phones are quite poor and the N8 isn't looking to be much better on that front.

WinMo is discontinued now to make way for Windows Phone 7 is it not?

OP, as I said, you want to be comparing the Galaxy S and the Desire (as it seems you decided against an iPhone?), by all means try a HD2 but it would be a mistake to get one.

No but you tried to rule out the 2 android alternatives purely on specs ;)

Which is why I suggested the Desire and X10 as alternatives, they may not be as good spec wise but they are more supported than the Galaxy S, besides only a week or so ago they were the best thing since sliced bread so they can't be that bad in comparison :D

Really depends what you intend to use it for, as a multimedia device android and iphone are pretty hard to beat.

Business use blackberry and symbian are both good, there phones generally have less bells and whistles than the above but they do usually have much better battery life etc plus will do pretty much anything required of them just not as "fun" as the above.

Symbian although old, is still more than capable of doing most tasks, the user interface is really beginning to show its age now and really has no "wow" factor what so ever but it still gets the job done.

I agree most of there phones are rubbish though, I like the E series as they are really well made and have great call quality, loudspeaker etc but with exception of a few 6*** phones and the N97 they are the cheapest and nastiest looking phones out there, what they were thinking when they made the N96 for example was beyond me

True, but as stated above about the Desire, it has been around awhile now and is more supported, plenty of custom roms etc for people to try.

Fair enough. The only reason I didn't mention the Desire and so forth was because the OP didn't ask about it.

I assumed he liked the HD2 or the Galaxy S (for some reason), so gave it to him as I see it.

Arghhh so many opinions!

Ok, not so sure now, watched a video of the galaxy S and I must admit I have lived in houses that are smaller than it. Might reconsider and go for something a bit more portable.

Guess ill have a look online tonight and come back with more questions :p

nexus one

little bit smaller than the galaxy s
best OS
best support

infact just go to a few shops and try all the current android phones and the hd2. see what suits your needs and what you like
