So, basically I am looking for a good CPU for gaming and video editing/encoding. I am not afraid to do a little overclocking either. I am looking either to get the 965, get the 955 and overclock it to 3.4GHz or more (is there any other difference than clock speed between this and the 965?), or get the 1055T and overclock it to 3.4GHz.

The motherboard I am using is the Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H. My main questions:
  • Is the 965 worth the money?
  • Will oveclocking the 955 be as good as the 965, and can it reach 4GHz with a Xigmatek Thor's Hammer?
  • Can I get the 1055T to 3.4GHz with the Thor's Hammer? And is this practical?

Thanks,
Jake

You must remember that most 965 and 955 chips do not reach 4GHz without a lot of voltage which will shorten the life of the CPU. It's worth going for something like 3.7-3.8GHz, as many CPUs will do this with only a slight bump up from stock voltage.

The 1055T will get to 3.4 easily enough.

The 965 tends to have slightly more overclocking ability, but it is rarely worth it for the £20 premium.

As for X6 vs X4, it depends on the programs you use, and how multi-threaded they are.

So really, as the 1055T is the same price as the 965, I'm better off getting that and overclocking. I didn't really expect to reach 4GHz, just wanted to know how close each of them could reach. Looks like the 955 vs 1055T, or the Clock vs Thread war!

1055t can turbo 1-3 cores to 3.3ghz if only 1-3 cores are beeing used by whatever you are doing so turning turbo off and manually getting 3.4ghz should be dead easy

I've highlighted all the questionable parts of this post. I've seen 1055Ts get 4GHz on 1.4v easily, and they've got two extra cores to cope with. It's more dependent on your cooling really (and the Thor's Hammer with a decent fan is certainly adequate). The x6s are not just the same chip with two more cores, there's various other improvements that make it really worth the extra £20, if you can afford it then definitely go for it in my opinion.

It's generally Adobe After Effects (3D rendering as well) and Sony Vegas. I use Vegas day-to-day and use After Effects a few times a month for editing 10-min action scenes, creating intros and 3D effects.

if the 1055T is the same price as the 965 you'd be mad not to go for the 1055T tbh.

2 extra cores, should be able to oc it to around 3.7-3.8ghz+.

Looks like I will be getting the 965. Found a deal for £100- black edition brand new and boxed! I will see how high I can clock that thing, but after coming from a 9650 2.3GHz I doubt I will need to! Just need to sort some RAM out for about £80, then if everything sells for what it is expected to, I will have spend £100 on a CPU/Mobo/RAM update from the fairly low end rig I have in my sig!

the 965 Black Edition is unlocked so you can overclock that same with new X6 1090T model so it up to you which one you spend -Ive upgraded from 965BE to 1090T BE (I put the 965BE in my dad PC so I used the 1090T) - both are very good run all way.

I recently bought a 965. I spent the little extra over the 955 thinking it will be a better chip generally. Easily overclocked it to 3.7 with 1.428v. Runs smooth.

If you're going to go 4 cores. Then by all means get the 955, I wouldn't bother with the 965 seeing as it's only £18 less than a processor with 2 more cores!

Though personally I would just get the 6 core 1055T. Sure, you may rarely use more than 4 cores but it's only £31 more than the 955 so why not. It may help you future proof a bit as well.

I'm running the 1055T at 3.93ghz and a friend is on a similar setup at 3.94ghz (damn him).

Contrary to what people say, hitting 4ghz isn't "easy". It is pretty easy, however, to hit 3.8/3.9. I'd imagine a lot will hit 4ghz too - as long as you're willing to spend a lot of time fiddling.

get the 1055t, just bought one myself, for £130 new and boxed off of a forum ;) . Its insane value for money, even if it wont hit 4ghz 3.8/3.9 is very quick.

by overclocker the CPU to make higher speed that usual send the temp climb higher over 50oC or more so watch the heat - if it excess the temp then Winodws OS has automatic shutdown as BSOD to stop from damage... dont use overclocker by spend too long... Ive tried few times fews years ago - I didnt overclock my X6 1090T yet.. I leave it out. Only 965 BE or 1090BT BE are unclocked which you can overclock - 955/1055T are not unlocked

Yeah, I got the the 965BE, only looking for something like 3.7/3.8GHz, what kind of voltage would you recommend for that?
