Hi All,

Specs

Q9550 E0 stepping @3.7
Asus P5Q
Corsair TX850W PSU
Sapphire OC HD5970 (Stock)
WD CAviar Black (Boot drive)
OCZ Vertex2 60GB SSD
Creative XFi Xtreme Gamer PCi Card.
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit

As above. Just replaced my crap P5N-D mobo for an Asus P5Q. I am happy with it so far (Considering it cost £0).

Been nudging up the OC, so far to 3.7, but my little Arctic Freezer 7 V1 is struggling.

IntelBurnTest and CoreTemp report that my cores are 83 - 87deg after 20 Passes on Standard setting.

Need to source a Cooler that will drop these temps. I have been looking at TRUE's, Noctua D14's, H50 etc....

Budget £75 TOPS............

Standard size Atx case, Front and rear 120mm fans in Push/Pull config.

Any ideas??

A

All the coolers you mentioned are all good, just down to which one you want. I would consider investing in a better case for cooling in the near future, antec 300 is a good choice if you're on a budget.

the noctua or the corsair if you want to splash that much, the noctua is massive though, and supposed to be better than the corsair

There's a new noctua coming soon based on the dh14 but smaller so people with memory can use one the current dh14 can only be used if you have ultra low profile heatsinks on the ram.67c IBT load is nothing to worry about btw all that matters is gaming and other cpu usage temps.
If you cant wait get a thermalright venomous X.

Heres the new noctua based on the DH14 but smaller so it doesn't block 3 ram slots.

Thanks for the replies.

At desktop, my idle temps are 27-29 c. Room temp 23c.

Application and Gaming Temp 48-54 c. Room temp 23c.

Narrowed it down to 4 choices.

1. Noctua D14

2. Titan Fenrir V2

3.Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Rev.C

4. Corsair H50

This Q9550 can go above 4Ghz. I was tinkering with a 3.95ghz OC. Voltage was good, Stability was good. IBT temps Not good!! 83-87c on run 17/20.

So I'm thinking longevity here. Something that will last a few years. Capable of accomodating a CPU/Mobo upgrade in the future (i7 probably).

However, looking at the TRUE's, they are truly a work of art. I have my eye on the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Rev.C, the trouble is, which Fan/Fans to marry it up with? ( I have no idea).

So, bottom line is High OC stability on the Temps and Longevity.

I've been mulling over a replacement HSF for my setup running at 3.8.

The noctua HSF's look good to me, also the Akasa venom.

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I bought the Corsair H50 for one rig and a Thermalright IFX-14. The IFX-14 is by far the better cooler, and with a 120mm case fan from my CM690 case its the quietest cooler i've ever used. Its currently keeping my i7 930 (3.6GHz) in the mid-30s idle and mid-50s on load.

If it were me, i'd demote the H50 and put the IFX-14 into your top 4 for sure.
From having used the Freezer Pro 7 and the Tuniq Tower, it beat those as well by quite a way.

The cocage arrow is an improved version of Thermalright IFX-14
Problem with these coolers imo is that they only become as good when you add high rpm fans to them like the TRUE yea its good but noisy with 2x anything much over 1200 rpm.
btw are those load temps intel burn test ? or gaming ? if gaming that's nothing special at all and completely average.

A while back i ran a q9550 at 3.8ghz under a TRUE, the fans used were a pair of sharkoon silent eagle se's, theese are modular cabled fans, not the 1000 or 2000 rpm modes nornmally seen, ran via pwm, (400-1200 rpm) i found them to be excellent on the TRUE, extremely quiet with load temps at 57-56-47-47, 1.200 vid chip, vcore at 1.216 for 3.825 ghz. With coolers such as the TRUE, static pressure is the one to look out for rather than high rpm due to the tight fin spacing.

Yea but I am used to running a tuniq with 1 fan at 998 rpm so when i hear even 2 fans at 1000+rpm that's breaching my quiet comfort zone established with the tuniq.I'd still just get a venomous x though if he cant fit the noctua, it is slightly better than the true and true black after all.

It was running prime95. My point is, its damn near silent and keeps the temps very respectable.
I'd have no hesitation buying another (as long as it fits, its huge), but i'll look out for the cocage arrow if thats the revamped edition, thanks. ;)

@setter.

Looking at the TRUE, do they need to be lapped? or can one use the pressure mod 70lbs instead of 40lb?

I dont have any experience in 'lapping' and would kak myself just thinking about ruining a £45 piece of kit if i went wrong. lol

I wish everyone would stop talking about the TRUE ? the venomous X is right up there with the noctua d14 yes get one if it's significantly cheaper than the venomous x otherwise get the Vx it is the new and improved true/true black no point getting a vanilla true or true black over the venomous x rant over.

In my case it helped, but the base on mine was pretty poor, the model i have doesnt have a pressure adjustable mounting bracket. Lapping a cooler is pretty easy, you have to be more careful though when doing a cpu

Agree about the vx, if buying a new cooler theese days the vx or d14 (if it fits your setup) are the best choices.

@setter, thanks for the reply. Well, I settled on the Noctua NH-D14. Clicked the 'Confirm Order' and its on its way.

Spent a couple of hours in my case, with a tape measure and Dremel to hand :D

Although its a bog standard 'off the shelf' case, I have made a few 'Homebrew' mods to it over time.

The top 3 Optical Drive Bays have been 'Dremel'd' away to 1.

The 6 HDD Bay has been reduced to 2 parts, a 2 bay section at the top and 1 bay section near the bottom. Allowing the Sapphire HD5970 to have a lot of clearence.

Added 2 Case Fan mounts in the newly created space at the front. Keeps the 5970 uber cool.

Added a removable mesh shelf in front of the PSU to house un-used cables.

When I get the D14 installed, I will return with some benchies on the s775 Q9550.

Trouble is, I'm looking at replacing the case fans now......lol.

Got the cooling bug....;)

Update:

Arrived today, bang on time.

Just had enough time to unbox and pick my jaw off of the floor.

It is an incredibly beatifull piece of design art.

Looking forward to fitting it tomorrow.

Installed at last.

Heres a quick bench of it on my system (see post #1)

IBT set to 20 runs , standard setting.

Room Temp 24 deg.

Set a high 1.3625v Vcore in Bios. OC to 3.7 ghz.

The Arctic Freezer Pro 7 V1 @ 2400rpm, gave me 86 deg on run 17/20 in IBT.

Here is the Noctua NH-D14 @ 1300 rpm results.

D14_IBT_end20run.jpg

You can see it shaved off 19 deg at max temp, compared to the AFP7

At last, got the 'legroom' now for some serious OC'ing.

A great bit of kit. If you have any questions, please ask.
