The Sopranos

Fantastic show.

I was a fan of Furio despite him being one of the more minor characters.

Also, Johnny Sac was tremendous.

I have seen them all but might get the full box set one of these days.

It is simply one of the best TV series I have watched. If you shop around you can pick up the complete set for sixty quid.

For me The Wire and The Sopranos cannot be split, they are most awesome!

The Shield is a notch below as I found the first 3-4 episodes a bit cringe worth as Makie character was a poor mans McNulty lol.

Dexter is also brilliant.

My wife and I went through all of the series of The Sopranos and The Wire over the past 6 months or so. Both are superb series but for me The Wire just won. I was slightly gutted when we finished the last ep of S5 and I knew there wasn't another one after.

I am tempted to give The Shield a try too. Also can't wait for S2 of Sons of Anarchy to start on Bravo at the end of this month.

Just finished watching this really good tv drama, it took me just over 3 weeks I think for all episodes :D I was really enjoying it even though somewhere in the middle I got annoyed by some of the issues they were having ie money problem which was kinda not very realistic.

I think I am going to have few weeks break before watching The Wire or some other series.

---------------SPOILERS---------------

I wouldn't call it vague either, it's just not conclusive. I think more likely that not Tony's dead. Failing that he's back in hospital but definitely not in charge anymore and possibly facing serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence.

Did you read the link two posts up? It may change your mind. In my view it is a very clever ending and as conclusive as it gets. You just need to adopt Tony's perspective.

I couldn't be arsed reading all of it but I think I got the general gist (hitman eyeing up Tony, never in his eyeline so Tony does spot him that's why he doesn't seem bothered, something like that?).

SPOILERS BELOW

That and also Bobby talking to him about the death of a gangster, not hearing anything and only seeing black/darkness or some such.

Tbh I think he did get shot. Just imo.

yes, moreover camera techniques which put you in T's POV, doesn't take a genius once you realise you are occasionally watching the scene from his POV to figure out what is going on when the blackness hits!

David Chase has confirmed that there's more than one way of interpreting the ending, so any site that claims to be the definitive explanation isn't. There's lots of speculation in that article. The ending is vague, but it's also genius (though I was disappointed when I first saw it).

Personally I don't think Tony was killed. I think the guy in the Member's Only jacket whacked the viewer, not Tony. The fact is that over the 6 and a half series we've been privy to the intimate details of an individual - his families, his mistresses, his mind. The ending of The Sopranos isn't the end of Tony, it's the end of our window into his life.

Yes, I've always liked that interpretation but given that the viewer at that moment is viewing the scene from Tony's POV i think it's over for the big fella, particularly with all the comments int the final series regarding not knowing when you are hit (or words to that effect). Chase also made comments that all the info was there in the final scene implying a lack of ambiguity if you digest all the info. Still of course it is open to interpretation but as ever, I view my interpretation as the correct one;)

Hmm, I must re-watch the scene but I'm sure the last picture (before screen goes black) was from the viewer's POV, not Tony's. Agree that the comments earlier in the series are significant (it's been confirmed as such from one of the producers), but it could be applied to both Tony or the viewer. My main beef with your interpretation is that it's a bit too easy to end the series with the death of Tony - everyone was expecting it, and even more so with the tension in the final 6 episodes. It just seems a bit of an obvious way of ending it, not in keeping with the rest of the series.

Personally i thought The Wire was significantly better than The Sopranos. I loved The Sopranos but The Wire is another beast entirely. I am a sucker for social commentary though

I would reluctantly agree with this assessment but I would still rate the Sopranos higher purely for the opening few seasons. The Wire just kept getting better and better for me whereas The Sopranos slowly went downhill in my opinion.

Resue Me and Deadwood are a close third and fourth.
