This happens every so often when driving about town and goes off when on the motorway. flushed the radiator but nothing changed
and to be honest i dont think my radiator fan is kicking in as when i stop after a long run it isnt running

Any ideas as to what this might be guys? Thermostat?

Cheers

Probably a problem with the rad fan, if not then the 'stat.

Considering you've been regularly overheating the engine, I don't suppose you have a mayo type substance lurking underneath the oil filler cap?

If the temp light's working then the thermostat is probably working too. (temp gauge not working)?

Everything else you said points to a busted fan.

:o I retract my previous statement. Although I still think it's the fan.

The question stands though – does the temp gauge on the dash not show anything?
i dontnhave a guage on the dash :( lol just the light.

and no mayo stuff on the oil cap, H/G is fine :p

getting the stat changed today, if that fails ill be looking at a new fan? can i get this alone or do i need a new radiator?

The fact that it overheats in traffic/slow moving roads but not on the motorway would suggest to me that its the radiator fan.

What car?

This.

I know nothing about cars, but the fact that it's fine when there's a good airflow into the front of the car screams that it's a faulty fan to me.

yeah just back from the garage, and the radiator fan's wires are corroded.
so i have to drop it back off tomowrrow and he is going to rewire it :) just hope the actual fan motor is working and it is just the cables.

Cheers

wut? You realise the thermostat is a totally different entity to the coolant temp sender....

He could have been thinking of the HDI engine :p :p

But yeah, first stop is rad thermostat switch, next is fan. Unless it's french, then you should find that turning on the interior light should sort it.

Was going to say, get it hot, then park up and see if the fan is running, typically you can always hear it kicking in when it starts (and see it, it's on the radiator at the front of the car)

As you said, hopefully it's just the wires.

Otherwise, check ebay for a replacement for your car, unless it's something new etc...

Yeah i do hope its just corroded wiring, after my 5 mile journey home from work yesterday i left the car running and popped open the bonnet and the fan wasnt moving
