I currently use PS3 Media Server to stream stuff from my laptop to the PS3.

I have a 20mb connection but use my laptop wirelessly via a router.

When i try to play something HD it stutters on the PS3.

Is there some settings i need to change on my laptop o the ps3 media server to stop this or alternatively what can i do to sort the problem?

Its fine when playing bbc iplayer so i presume its due to bandwidth needed?

Cheers

It's most likely either the actual video encoded in the MKV might not be supported by the PS3, so it's re-encoding on the fly , or as you are saying your wireless connection, to rule out the wireless, can you not plug the laptop straight into the PS3? try that and see how it goes?

Stream to your game console

For many, PlayStation® 3 and Xbox 360 have become important parts of their entertainment experience. If you're a gamer who's also running Windows 7, the DivX Plus Codec Pack lets you stream DivX and DivX Plus HD (H.264/MKV) video straight from your PC to your gaming weapon of choice

Might be a good idea to uninstall all codec packs first, so the files actually stream rather than get transcoded.

Works perfect for the 360, using Windows Media Center. Meant to try it on brothers PS3 but he moved out before I could

It will absolutely be down to the wireless. If you were to hardwire the PS3 and the laptop, you wouldn't have a problem.

IS your lappy running with high cpu utilization? It might not be able to cope. You may surprised how much power you need to stream and transcode .mkv files on the fly. Secondly, wireless + high bit rate HD rips = farse. Switch to wired ethernet if possible. Remember wireless will only allow around 25mbps at best. I've had some ultra high def rips saturate 100mbps wired ehthernet when they have peaked.

PS3 mediaserver doesn't stream MKV files, it can only transcode them. That's why it stutters.

Only way to properly stream IIRC is to share the folder on a Windows 7 machine and install DivX Codec, only ever tried it with 360s though, works perfect :)

Had the same problem with mine. Gave up and hard wired it.. Everything plays perfect now the PS3,s wireless is not the greatest...

To be honest, while the PS3's wireless adapter is utter garbage, my opinion of wireless technology in general is much the same. I have never come across anybody's wireless setup that actually works 100% properly.

Sure, I'm now about to get barraged with people saying they never have a single problem, which is fine, but I can assure you that in certain scenarios or under certain tests, wireless networking just doesn't hold up. It's utterly bizarre as it's such a powerful technology you would think the manufacturers would strive for it to be flawless. Unfortunately what we do get is a mishmash of standards and qualities of kit.

Try this for your mkv ps3 playback

http://www.mkv2vob.com/ - great little app

I run all mkv's through that then use media server to serve my needs

You what? The whole point in people using PS3 media server is mainly foer the transcoding of mkv files on the fly. i.e. You don't have to worry about converting anything to anything. PS3 media server can deal with them all. It works fine if you have a good enough CPU. It sounded like you are saying that this is the reason it stutters full stop. Well no, it's the reason it "can" stutter, which is I'm sure what you meant. So to conclude:

1: Make sure your CPU is not running at 100% when transcoding mkv files on the fly.
2: If it does run at 100% then try capping the bandwidth/bitrate in the PS3 media server settings.
3: Where possible use wired ethernet preferably gigabit so you never need worry about it.
4: Don't expect anyone to be interested in helping assist with stuttering problems when using wireless because the first reply is going to be to use wired.
