08 1.2 Automatic Micra...

Meh i did York to London and back 3 times in 2 weeks last year in a 13 year old Pug 106 1.1

Some people are just so used to turbo that and air con this its almost as if they think doing without is real hardship.

I did exeter - Glasgow - st Andrews - Glasgow - Exeter in an escort 1.8 n/a diesel. It coped fine and I'd still rather have been there than on a train!

The rate hasn't changed in a good few years in which time fuel costs have increased alarmingly and general insurance costs are higher then they used to be. Use a sensible car and you can still make a worthwhile contribution to your running costs. Last time I went to London and back I got £170 and used under £40 of fuel. The rest paid for that years service and MOT.

Precisely :)

It'll be more than capable!
I had to do a 3 hour drive in an R reg Micra a few times, and being 6' 6" you can imagine it being quite uncomfortable... However, I got there in one piece, got out stretched my legs and I was perfectly fine!

People are just being car snobs.

I have a 10 year old micra that won't get changed until I graduate. Yes it has no power, yes it has no electric windows, yes it has no air con.

But really, oh noes my fancy beemer is broken how can I possibly live with something slower/smaller?

Public transport is for losers, use the micra.

Agreed.

Public transport is cattle transport and a rip off, even a micra with a working stereo is a MAJOR improvement. The only reason I ever use public transport is because for me it's free and so I can drink ( unlike with car, bike or moped).

If I had to do london to aberdeen in a auto 1.2 micra, I would seriously consider splitting the journey in 2 both ways or hiring a different car, much as I like small cars its just a non starter.

I wouldnt even consider it in my 1.4 zetec (89 bhp 9.6 seconds to 60 and 112 mph top speed) festa from here (grantham) and its a LOT faster than a 1.2 auto Micra.

Good lord, that's quite pathetic.

Yes, if you do a lot of big trips, you want a car more suitable for the task. But is is a one off, the micra would have handled it just fine if he needed it to. Which do you think is going to explode in a pile of steam and blood if he spent 8 hours behind the wheel of a small car - driver or car?

It's irrelevant since the Subaru is being taken now but I've done Edinburgh to Cornwall and Edinburgh to London a couple of times in a poky 1L Nissan Micra - it's not the most comfortable I've ever been certainly but it's perfectly do-able and I'm comfortably over 6'.

A long distance London to Scotland train is rather different to a local bus in the Netherlands.

I have a comfortable, climate controlled executive saloon with full leather interior parked outside yet sometimes I'll favour public transport over it for certain longer distance journeys as it is cheaper and nicer when booked in advance (Week before last Plymouth to London and Return, First Class, £45. Fuel for 420 mile round trip = £70, parking = £30).

You cant blanketly bland all public transport as 'cattle transport'.

It's not really, splitting a journey as long as that into two is quite a reasonable thing to do if you've a less than suitable car - it means you arrive more refreshed and more ready to do a days work.

That's not what I was referring to - I meant the fact he wouldn't even consider a long journey in a 1.4 fiesta

Yea i think those sweaty no air con, 10 hours of having to thrash something to get to 70 every 3 miles between slow downs on the motorway are just a laugh a minute :)

Whats wrong with that? If he feels that his car isn't suitable for it - and he knows it better than we do - who are we to disagree?

If I had a 1.4 Fiesta I can imagine picking the train for a 1000 mile round trip as well.

I wouldn't especially look forward to the trip either, and of course I'd rather be in something big and comfy but if I needed to make a big trip and owned a small car, I'd still do it.

Sometimes driving is the only option - cost, luggage, flexibility etc etc. A train fare can be a lot more expensive and you can only take so much stuff with you. And what do you do when you get there? Hire a car.... Great, more cost.

If I only needed one bag, didn't need a car when I was there, the tickets were well priced and the stations were close to where I needed to be then I'd consider the train.

I did Leeds - Bristol and back in a day in a 1.8d escort van during summer with no stereo.

You sir are a pussy.

In a month i'll be doing York - Pevensey in a 1.25 fiesta carrying 4 people plus luggage.

He's still a pussy.

Good for you, I would suggest that rather than being a pussy, I'm not someone who given the choice, would choose to pick the more comfortable of the options available rather than choosing the less comfortable.

That would would mean, rather than being being a pussy, I'm not a complete ******* moron.

I am confused here, you are going all the way to Aberdeen on business and you are going to drive?

wut?

You can fly there in sub 1:30, why on earth are you not flying that kind of distance? even the train takes forever to get all the way up there.

We have some clients around the Edinburgh area, not even once has it even occurred to me to not simply drive the 30mins from my house to LHR and fly there in around an hour, i can be there for 9am easily. Domestic flight, you barely even have to queue at the airport, and LHR short stay is around 5mins walk from the checkin area?
