You might need to try and get used to meeting the public as you progress through life
Other people suck, I often to uni with public transport, but always get annoyed with waiting ( more so than waiting for a red light), having to stand, and generally not being able to do whatever I want ( like blast music at high volumes), being too hot, some junkie rolling a joint beside me, etc...
As soon as it's goodbye free student public transport card it's goodbye bus/tram/metro/train for me. They won't get my money for the rubbish they offer.
Is first class in the UK really that much better, do you get your own rooms or something ?
I hate traveling by train I'm always bored while in the car you can turn up the radio and listen to highway to hell and sing along loudly or whatever. Driving is more fun that staring out the window of a train or being bored on a lappy.

lol some of you folks really crack me up. Its a car journey, it won't have the comfort factor of a motorised leather armchair, but it'll even have air-con.
You make it sound like a year in a salt mine, not a car journey that won't be any quicker in a Bentley.
Reminds me of the snobs that won't go to London unless its first class....its a nice to have, but its not essential.

I'm not even talking 1st class anyway. If you are bored the that's your fault! Personally I read things online while listening to music or watch something on my phone, far from boring and hardly sat for hours looking out of a window, which ironically is what you are doing when driving!
You don't need to be blaring music out when you have headphones in/on, if you do then you need to realise you look a ****.
that's a matter of opinion. If you need the space and the comfort to be able to work, or whatever, prior to your arrival then first class is a good option, especially in certain job roles / industries.
For general travelling I would agree, it's not needed
Thats kind of the point, its a terrible journey in any car, let alone a micra.
Why subject yourself to that when there are alternatives.

I've had these as hire cars in the past, no issues apart from a slightly busy (3500rpm) cruise and 'flat' seats... they don't look good but drive no better/worse than most other things in the class...and probably better than a 'medium' size car from 10 or so years ago...
Acceleration was the same as a passat 2.0 TDI up to 70 MPH.... (to his surprise...)
Manual of course, the AUTO's are a bit crap....

To all the people saying ''well you won't get there any faster in a Bentley etc'' that is really not the point of hiring a more suitable car. You won't get there faster but the nine hour journery will be a a lot more pleasant for the driver. This is especially the case as the OP needs to get to work as soon as he arrives. I've done a 250mile journey in a 06' 1.25 Fiesta consisting of busy roads and motorways and by the end I had an array of random aches pains and just needed to sit down. That's not an ideal way to start your training at work.

That's exactly what I mean - and the OP is doing 8-9hrs and 500+ miles and then starting work.
Although my 250 miles were just to go to a friends so it wasn't that bad. I was able to just collapse on a sofa and have a rest
No it wasnt, 1.2 manual 13.1 seconds to 60, auto 17.3
2.0lt tdi passat 0-60 in 9.6 seconds.
and no they dont, 10 years ago was putting you in a X reg mondeo, a far nicer place to be in any spec than any micra of any engine size or spec.

Road trips are awesome, do it, car will be fine, you will be fine. Soak up some scenery on the way and enjoy it.

I'll be making stops in Durham and Newcastle before i reach Aberdeen, in Durham its personal (ebay collection of 2 UPS units, saves me a fair bit of dosh in shipping and works out for me since its more or less along the way) and i'm collecting another Schools rep in Newcastle as they've made a deal with them and its a partner school in this entire video conferencing thing we're implementing, adds a little to my travel allowance plus i hope shes at least eye candy Plus i'm collecting some video conferencing kit from the place i'm going to as we've purchased it, which will be bulky so i guess a larger car was really the best option. I'm a little nervous about driving the legacy in that i might get a little stupid behind the wheel but i'm going to keep that right foot in check as i know Scotlands a little crazy on speeding 
compared to my 320D the Twinscroll 280bhp on the legacy is a bloody missle.

I suppose its all down to how much you like to be out of your comfort zone, I can happily slum it,when needs be.
If you want a hatefull car, try driving a Reno Kangoo 1.6 now that was awefull, still did 100mph on the Autobahn for me last week
