Toads are Frogs, but Frogs aren't Toads, or are they?!

Basically, this little fella has started off a search for the truth.

Some people say Toads are Frogs, I disagreed.

Until I did a bit of reading...

I've copied this attempt at explaining from something I wrote in an earlier conversation.

Here's what I found;

This is kinda interesting, see if what I've written makes any sense, it's kinda late..

All "True Toads" are part of the family Bufonidae, which is amongst the order Anura, Anura consists of mainly Frogs, but Toads are also present as the sub family Bufonidae.

But it's like saying Humans are Gorillas. Humans are part of the Primate Order, and family Hominidae. Gorillas, Chimps and Humans are all part of this family.

e.g.

Common toads

Order (Anurans (Frogs and Toads)) > Family (Neobatrachia) also contains frogs and toads > Sub Family (e.g. Bufonidae) contains only toads.

Humans

Order (Primates) > Sub Order (Haplorrhini) > Infraorder (Simiiformes) > Parvorder (Catarrhini) > Superfamily (Hominidae) consisting of humans, chimps and gorillas.

Common toads don't even share a sub family with frogs, where as us humans share a superfamily with Gorillas and Chimps. So it's like saying all Humans are Gorillas.

A better way of saying it is, all humans and gorillas are hominids.

or

All toads and frogs are Anurans.

and then I realised...

I've just realised Anurans = Frogs, but it consists of a family called Bufonidae = Toads. So technically Toads are Frogs. But they have their own family and name, Toad. However, they are under the Order of Anurans, so they're frogs, but at the same time, toads.

They're neither one or the other, they're both.

So, what do you think?

You didn't lick it did you?

My head feels like I might as well have.

Here's a little diagram.

So as you can see, Toads are part of the Frog Family, and Anura means Frog.

However just because it's technically a Frog, doesn't mean it's not a Toad.

It's both.

*head explodes*

I hope you washed your hands. Apparantly the oils on human skin can hurt a frog or toad.

I am sure that's what some kids program said when I was 10 lol.

It's true.

My hands were fairly dry and clean and I didn't hold it for long. Only enough to take the photo.

Did you know also, Toads can live for up to 40 years! I think the average is like 10-25 though.

Did they get chips?

:D

I've just realised, Anura doesn't just mean frog, it's frogs and toads.

So I guess Toads are just Toads, and share an Order with Frogs.

You can't just trace up the tree like thst (as you found). The issue is a lot of the time common and scientific language gets confused and this is probably one of those occasions. I'm not going to be more specific as it's late and a while since I did things with orders, families etc (and I was rubbish at it then too :p).

If you think that's confusing just look at mollusks and other shellfish, now there is chaos. :p Things you think are similar/the same are actually totally different and in a completely different orders and even groups.

iphones are phones but phones arent iphones

and speaking of frogs and cats we just had the first rain in weeks and theres a massacre going on outside.

Right now i am regretting drinking!
What where who why frog toad human gorilla!

And to one of the questions, its the salt from our skin that dries out toads/frogs.

Anyways enough of this mind blag!
