So just got around to watching TUF Final and I see they now have a female ref (Kim Winslow)

Now before anyone starts, I am not saying she isn't upto the task in theory but I find it quite weird that there is a female in the very close vicinity of 2 guys knocking the ba-jeezus out of each other (ok this is normal on a Fri/Sat night out in Glasgow where the lass is usually swinging a stiletto about and getting stuck in herself)

Generally speaking, it shouldnt be an issue but it its not the first time I have seen a ref getting accidentally hit or having to pull the fighters apart. WTF is going to happen then ??

Call me sexist, old fasioned or whatever but it just doesn't seem... right watching a female ref in this situation :o

Just an observation and wondered what others thought about...

The refs are not employed by the UFC.
It is the state athletic commissions which assign the referees to bouts.

If it's the one I recall, she has been the ref for quite a few MMA fights although not necessarily on UFC cards

Almost as bad as using a female umpire for the mens Wimbledon final a couple of years ago for some reason. I don't recall there being a shortage of top quality male umpires that year.

Well, to be fair, Tennis is slightly different from a fighting sport.

I am not questioning whether women can do the job in theory but can they do it in practice and, having now watched the bout, I would say not if she was indicative of them generally - right at the end of the bout, both fighters are going for it as its about to go to a scorecard. The bell (well, klaxon) goes and she hangs back about 3 feet from them with her hands out to them to get them to stop.

If this was Herb Dean, for instance, he would have got right in between the pair of them to stop it...

Smit - Sorry, never meant to insinuate that they are employed by the UFC, its just the first fight I hae seen a female ref in.

It's perfectly acceptable.

UFC fighter could rip apart any ref, male for female, having a bit more testosterone will do nothing.

I found it a bit odd as well. I started paying attention to how well she'd separate the fighters if they were all over each other at the end of the round, and well.. it ended up being what i would do (ie wasnt great).

Yea right.. you think a big ref, like John McCarthy couldn't restrain or hold back a fighter better than that female ref??

I didn't say that wasn't the case and using the "testosterone" argument is silly.

Having someone like Herb Dean jump in is going to have a better effect than a woman doing the same.

I am not talking about the fighters losing control and lashing out but sometimes, in the heat of a good "toe-to-toe" the fighters dont hear the end of the round and so the ref literally steps in and stops it which could mean taking a dig or two themselves.

As I say, its not being sexist. A female can theoretically ref in these sports as well as a male but in practice it doesn't seem to work. Before you say this is not the case, watch the fight between Spencer Fisher and Steve (or Dave) Ives

Did any of you see her on Strikeforce last night?

It was worse than her TUF final performance, waaaaay worse; I think she may have actually pushed the development of MMA back 10 years, it was very difficult to watch.

Yeah found it very strange, she was able too handle cyborg quite well but I feel she should have stopped the fight it was unnecessary since cyborg was battering her non stop. Was even more crazy silly seeing 2 female fighters and a female refereeing them both.

Am surpised no ones even made a thread on the Fedor Strikeforce event.....

It was coming a mile away, having seen all of Fedors matches you can see 80% of his fights came from early mma events and pride matches with japanese guys that just put on a show.

Dana white of ufc twittered

: )

Bet hes over the moon, anyhow I wanna see more of this female referee

If she put on some spectacles she can give me a red card any day of the week.

The big thread saying "SPOILERS - Strikeforce Last night - SPOILERS!!!!!"

Yeah, no idea why nobody made one.

i remember somebody else saying earlier i should watch some of the other mma programs then they mentioned a programme that involves female mma fighters. i said i didnt like female mma fighters, they then said but there is female boxers, i then said i dont care if there is female boxers i dont approve of them either.

say what you want about equality, the last thing i want to see is women in the armed forces, women in boxing and women in mma unless of course they are carrying the cards with the numbers 1-12 (1-5 for mma and 1-12 for boxing) before each round scampily clad in bikinis.

women should not be involved in barbaric acts of violence, this referee looks like a crack addict, so do all the female boxers and female mma fighters, the only time i want to see a crack addict is in a movie played by an actor/actress or in a real life tv show like big brother

Yeah giant skeletor woman ref'd well at strikeforce I thought. Despite the moronic crowd boo's and calls to stop it, she stopped it at just the right time for me.

She's not too bad, seems a little green still, but better than Mazzagatti or Yves Lavigne.
