A customer on a test drive at Trainer BMW reversed into mine after the MOT. Gutted isn't the word :(

unlucky but its only minor cosmetic damage by the looks of it so should be quick and easy to repair just not cheap.

Should be covered by the liablity of trainer bmw, its only cosmetic by those photos get them to book it into a decent bodywork specialist and should be good as new

Wont be any cost to you its just a big inconvenience. At least you have evidence of who it was! This happens in car parks all the time and people never leave notes they just drive off. Now that would be much worse. The instructor must have been pretty pants!

I would hope the car is still with the dealership with it being repaired as a matter of priority on Monday morning, with the car getting a free valet for the inconvience (failing that some refund on the MOT/service cost), and that in the meantime they've given you a cracking courtesy car to drive around in....?

This is what he should expect, but i somehow doubt it very much.

They will be ringing me monday as I still have the car. I have said that I need a car of similar size and power to my own and hinted at a F10 530d, but we will have to see.

If I hadn't stopped to talk to the parts guy......

I asked them to check the alloy to incase it was cracked. It is actually worse then those pictures depict as the wing is royally creased. There are also tyre marks and scratches on alloy, but other wise its all ok.

Well, I spoke too soon. I know have a judder in the rear wheel at motorway speeds. Could the wheel have been knocked so hard that it came out of balance?

I'd doubt it given the relatively light damage.

Unlucky none the less.

Not sure I'd be gutted at all, you now get some time hooning around in brand new BMW's and when it comes back you'll have nice fresh paintwork etc etc.

Win win surely?

The only snag is that this isn't actually the dealerships fault, is it? A customer did it. So I doubt they'll be bending over backwards to shower with you with compensation, why should they? It's a straight forward claim against a third party insurer. You might have some leverage if they wish to keep it out of insurance, though - if they suggest this by all means let them as they've got the cars to lend you and the bodyshop to do the work..

Given the marks on the wheel - its possible the wheel took the full brunt of the force and the cosmetic damage is secondry, unfortunatly the cap is saturated so can't see if theres any further damage on that tho I'd have thought it would have split given enough impact force to damage the wheel bearing.

I dunno mate, to my mind, wheels are designed to take quite a number of forces, shocks being one of them.

On the other hand, the noise is there now where it was not before, or, have you simply switched off the radio and now notice something that has been there for a while?

Try to get some more pics, I wonder what you mean about the cap being "saturated"

Have you jacked up the car & spun that wheel? does it look like its still rotating as it should?

Im going to guess the dealerships insurance excess will probably be more than my car is worth, so they are sorting it out through their own bodyshop. They said to me that as it was a demonstrator and my car was in their care until they handed it back, they were liable.

More on the plus side, there was a nasty gash on the bumper which I can have done at the same time (at no cost hopefully) being as they will have to mix a gun up with new paint. I guess there is a silver lining.

As to the wheel, I would have noticed the vibration before. I don't mind so much as I would have gotten the train into work, but I need the car to go to the DVLA to tax it (long story for another thread about how incompetent the DVLA are) so I have to drive it about 45 miles down the motorway tomorrow.

Car wheels aren't designed to take impacts from that direction, suspension works up and down not side to side, likewise the hub / wishbones aren't really designed to deal with shock from the side.

Wow Fox, are you serious? The car is at the Dealer, in their possession to be serviced and whilst its with them (regardless whether the owner is inside, just about to collect it or not) and is subsequently hit by one of their demonstrators - I believe they have every obligation to right the situation.

Also, a lot of garage's excess' are huge for other people to drive their cars; I know at Ford, Vauxhall and Skoda I've had to sign a disclaimer that I understand the excess is between £1500 and £2000 - I imagine the damage would be less than this.

Fox, you wouldn't be gutted that you have to waste loads of time having your car repaired. Back and forth to the repairer/dealer, on the phone. etc?

I would rather not have my vehicle damaged and get on with my life.
