Firefox 3.6.6 modifies the crash protection feature to increase the amount of time that plugins are allowed to be non-responsive before being terminated.

Please see the complete list of changes in this version. You may also be interested in the Firefox 3.6.4 release notes for a list of changes in the previous version.

Nice. :) Thanks for the heads up!

EDIT: You can tell it's hot off the press. The "thank you for installing" URL that opens when you finish the update currently recommends you install the latest version instead; which is a version below the one you just installed. :D

One thing that seemed new was on the congratulations you've upgraded screen when the new release was first started it pointed out that my Flash plugin was out of date and gave me the url at Adobe to update it.

I found that Mozilla Europe, that I was re-directed to from Google's mozilla.org result, had 3.6.3 whereas when I forced mozilla.org to load I got offered 3.6.4 in British English. :)

Thanks.

Just realise I'm still running 3.6.2, for some reason the download has been stuck on paused ever since it was released and I forgot about it .

Strange. When I started Firefox 3.6.3 at about 11 pm I got notification of some updates for add-ons but not for FF itself.

Help -> Check for Updates... gives me this:

So there _is_ an update but Firefox decided not to tell me about it because I'm running as a standard user and not using the administrator account? Is it just me or is that a disconcerning oversight on their part?

It probably is because you are a standard user. I would download Firefox using the links provided and then right click it and select 'run as administrator' :)

If you open up the Options window and go across to the Advanced tab, if you then select the Update tab, under the When updates to Firefox are found: the Automatically download and install the update option is most likely selected which is probably the reason why it didn't alert you when a new update is available. When it comes to installing the actual update, since you do not have the required privileges, the installation will simply fail without any further warning. A standard user will only ever have access to standard user rights, it's impossible for it to gain administrators, ignoring elevation mechanisms such as User Account Control of course.

Anyway, since you're running as a standard user, if you select the Ask me what I want to do instead of the Automatically download and install the update option, it should then alert you when a new update is available in the future. Though, you will most likely need to manually download the update, unless of course you run Mozilla Firefox as an administrator (if you are using an elevation mechanism), but that would obviously be a very silly thing to do. :p

Plugin-container.exe is causing me problems such as when opening a new window when watching flash video = grey screen instead of google and firefox.exe and the plugin remaining in processes after closing

think i'll roll back to the last version til the issues are fixed with this separate plug in thing

Thanks for putting time in to that reply, Fire Wizard, but I am already running with the "Ask me what I want to do" option ticked in the Update tab. I've had it like this 'since forever' and tend to do this with all programs with auto-update functionality, even preferring Windows Update to notify me before it runs off and does things behind my back :)

I'll just see what happens on the next update.

Since I upgraded to 3.6, it sometimes stutters or lags when I scroll. Anyone experiencing the same?

Hmm, I've not noticed that. Does Task Manager show Firefox using a lot of CPU power? How many tabs have you got open?

Try going to 'Tools > 'Options', then click on the 'Advanced' tab. In the 'General' sub-tab there is an option for smooth scrolling; is that checked?

I hope they integrate flash into all of the browsers

I find it annoying to download Flash

It's not very likely, and I'm glad of that. Not everyone likes Flash, and in the world of free software it'd basically mean losing Firefox as the de-facto browser due to the integration of non-free software (i.e. Flash). :( There are plenty of open standards such as HTML5 that could be driven forward if it weren't for the reliance on the old-fashioned, buggy and resource intensive Flash.

Oh my, I sound like Jobs. I'll shut up now! :o :p Anyway, from the horse's mouth...

According to Mozilla vice president of products Jay Sullivan, the open source outfit has no intention of bundling Flash or a native code plug-in with Firefox, preferring to advance HTML5 and other web standards. But Eich says that Mozilla is "definitely on board with the idea of revamping and improving plugin APIs" and has been since 2004, when it created the [email protected] mailing list.
