is the best way the harwich ferry, or has anyone else done something better/cheaper?

Depends where you are starting from. But the drive from Calais is easy and quick enough.

Works out cheaper Dover - Calais than the Harwich ferry.

Depends where your journey starts from.
Cheapest will probably be Norfolk Line across the channel and then driving up to Amsterdam.

I have done it via Calais

2.5 to 3 hrs drive

parking is dire in Amsterdam

not sure, girlfriend is gonna do her masters out there so i'm weighing up options. either way i'll be making semi regular trips back and forth. mostly i'll be starting from around london area.

Depends where in UK you are, P&O ferries from Hull to Rotterdam +1hr drive to Amsterdam can be quite cheap if booked in advance.
