Why is this board so cheap?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-289-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1283

Im waiting on a grill for my 800D to mount a 140.3 (looking at about another week) before I build a new system. So Im thinking I may aswell go i7 with it and for that a 930 with 6GB XMS3.

But, With the boards, I havent really paid much attention to boards since my last purchase.

So, its between the:
Asus P6T above
Asus P6TD Deluxe
Asus P6X58D Premium
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5

Yes, this is an excellent board, as gary says - they used to cost twice that price.

The reason they are so cheap is that ASUS found a load of them and offered them to OCUK for a great price. These boards are technically end-of-life as they have been replaced by the ASUS P6TD and Asus P6X58D Premium, but there is not much in the newer designs separating them from the P6T deluxe OC palm, the main difference are that they removed the SAS controller from the newer boards and added SATA 6G and USB3 support to some of them.

If you would like to see some reviews of this board, have a look here, here, here and here. IMHO it is an absolute steal at this price. I would also suggest looking around for cheap i7 920 D0 CPUs as these are also EOL, but considerably cheaper than i7 930 chips and physically they are the same chip - but the 930 has a 5% higher multiplier.

Ill stick with the 930 I think, surely will definetly hit 4.0 then?

But the board gets praise indeed for its cheap price, but I also want to add a SSD in the near future, wouldnt it then be better to go for the P6X58D P??

Aye, it will hit 4GHz, but so will the 920 - and that will cost you ~£30 less. If you are using air cooling then the 930 and 920 will overclock to the same level as the overclock will be limited by heat not the limits of the CPU/motherboard. However, if you are able to cool it more effectively (water or better) then the 930 does make sense as the slightly higher multiplier will allow for a 5% higher overclock.

If you want to add a SATA 6G SSD in the future, I suggest you buy a PCIe SATA 6G PCIe add-in card for ~£30. This is basically what the P6X58D (and other intel SATA 6G boards) do anyway - as SATA 6G is not native to any of them - they are simply added onto the PCIe bus.

Ya, Im on water, have been for years. But for the new build I have a PA140.3 waiting for a grill so I can mount it in the case, otherwise the rest is in my sig.

As for the SATA card, hmm. Im not sure. It makes sence, especially for the wallet. But Im gonna have to see if they look pretty, the 800D is the first case I had with a window, I usually shy away from windows but I love that case, and got a hella bargain on it from a member of these forums (cheers Mark).

EDIT: Also, I can only see 1PCIe slot, which my Soundcard will reside in :/

You could fit the sound card in the topmost x4 PCIE slot, this is where i have my Asus xonar dx.

My board is the Asus p6t deluxe v2 which has an identical layout to the oc palm edition.

Yes, but where would the 6gig PCIe card go then?

As fot the P6X58D-E, the SB looks lonely on that board.

Perhaps its worth going 965BE and Crosshair IV. Board looks sexy.

Yep, prior to adding the second gtx 275 i had my soundcard in the 2nd x16 PCIe slot, wouldnt fit in the 3rd though as my psu was in the way.

Thats awesome info. Many thanks!

Though no repies about a 965BE and crosshair IV?

As Im a gamer really, I rarely encode anything these days and dont render or anything. But I do enjoy overclocking.

Cracking board one of the best x58 board out there for overclocking if u ask me and the only reason i changed to my p6t6 revolution was that it could do tri 16x whilst the pt6 deluxe will only do 16x 16x 4x.

managed to get my 920 to 4.4 Ghz on that board and never had any problems with it also the oc device is useful for checking temps, or if not doing very high overclocks usefull for overclocking on the fly

snap it up its a great deal

Well, just found a 920 for £176 so just bought that before they all go.

Now, to decide on the board. Anyone got a link to these 6gig esata cards, please?

Edit, found one.

Well, if you pair
this: Startech 2-Port SATA III 6Gbps PCI-Express £39.99 inc VAT
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-004-SR&groupid=701&catid=49&subcat=

With this: Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition £119.99
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-289-AS

= £159.98

Which is basically: Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 £169.98

Shame the SB HS is all on its own. But probably worth going for it.

edit:

Well, I bought it,
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition Intel X58

Kinda feel I made a rash decision now though. But oh well. Maybe a Revo drive will be my next purchase hehe.

Thanks for the advice fella's.

If it helps, I've just done the same as you're considering.

I got the P6T Deluxe OC Palm from here, an i7 920 for £180 and 6GB Patriot Viper 1600Mhz. I spent last saturday clocking my system and in just a day got it to 4Ghz with the RAM at 1527Mhz at stock volts! I've turned hyperthreading off as at the moment it's no use to me but I will be trying to get a 4Ghz OC with HT on.

I've yet to do a long run of Prime (did about 3 1/2 hours small ftt's with no probs) but so far I've had no crashes while playing games or anything. For £450 total I'm incredibly happy with the upgrade.
