Employers denying time off during X month(s)?

We are not allowed time off 1 week either side of each month end...so that's 24 weeks a year

There are 4 people in my team, so we have to cram 4 x 5 weeks = 25 weeks holiday into the remaining 28 weeks

Can't have more than one person off at a time - just lucky only 2 of us have kids - I currently book my holiday up to 18 months in advance

What makes it do-able is that they aren't that strict for the occasional day off and 2 of the team prefer taking most of their hols that way

Jeez, where do you guys work?!

I can take my holiday when ever i choose! I work in IT as a Desktop Support Engineer and there are 4 of us so as long as none of them have it off then i'm fine.

Not allowed time off during busy periods (Easter, Xmas). I was also denied time off during the World Cup as watching the football "isn't a good enough excuse to take holiday". IT'S MY HOLIDAY, I'll do what I sodding well please with it!

im guessing retail, i worked for a high street electrical store chain and they wouldnt allow holidays from oct till the 3rd week of jan.

also easter was fun and games as well.

I work in retail and can technically take it whenever I want, that said its first come first and no more than a certain amount of people can be off at any one time. Sadly this means the next 2 months are a no go area. Doesn't bother me as I can have more around the end of the year this way.

Fortunately as my team is small i can take holiday whenever i want as long as no one else has booked the time off. With a team of 5 we have a maximum of 2 people off at any time, but if its something important this rule does get bent sometimes.

Unfortunately work insist on taking at least one 2 week holiday off during a year.

Sometimes I'm real glad I don't work for the Private Sector. Sure the job I do pays more in that sector but my pension, flexi-working and plenty of holidays that I can mostly take when I want (subject to projects & minimum staff levels) more than makes up for the loss of pay.

My wife's last job forced her to use a third of her holiday at Christmas. That sucked. Her new job is the opposite as she won't get hardly any days off at all but she does work in a Hospital so it's understandable.

You on whine because you are the employee but if you were a employer i am sure you wouldn't want all your staff going on holiday going on holiday during your busiest periods.

Its hugely understandable for companies to say when you can/can't take holidays, and if you are given advance notice of this why can't you plan around these restrictions. Yes you can counter argue and say surely they can get temps in, but if you were an employer would you want to recruit a fresh face temp with little knowledge of your company and how it operates for the busiest periods in your trading year???

Nope. Wouldn't want them all going. But wouldn't deny everyone either.

It's a hotel... So we're talking waitresses, barmaids, cleaners etc.

Temps with a bit of previous experience would be ample cover.

If it's a school holiday half term, summer etc, I'm not allowed to take time off period. :D
Any other time of the year is fair game.

Allowance runs from Jan to December, so a few years ago I combined part of two years worth of entitlement over Christmas to go to Thailand and the Maldives.
Big song and dance about having a month off. but I still went and I still have my job. :D

Its problematic when you let some and not others, as you will get arguments over who can take time off and who can't. Yes first come, first served is always an option, but then you can get problems with those who don't book early or get declined still wanting the time off and thinking stuff it at the last minute and quitting the job. Blanket ban seems stupid but in reality its the fairest way and easiest way to go about it, temps in the hotel industry i would see as problematic, considering if it is a prestigious hotel how do you know the temps are going to maintain the same standard, they are after-all temps will only be there for a few weeks therefore why should they really care about what they do in their job.

I understand where you are coming from, considering i previously worked for a large supermarket in a student town, so i wasn't supposed to take holiday over xmas and easter, but in the end i managed to come to a compromise with my manager.

Have you suggested you will work the really busy periods in exchange for the time off?
