Why Supreme Commander 2 sucks

A couple of days ago I bought SC2 from steam on special offer, I had delayed buying the game until I got my new graphics card and It seemed like this offer the day my card arrived was a godsend, I now know the is no god.

Supreme commander 2 has to rank in the top ten video game let downs of all time, it is an abomination, I may sound like im exaggerating as its been getting 7's and 8's from review sites but bare in mind its a sequal to the greatest RTS ever created and those numbers look pretty low :(

For those who don't know much about RTS games the are probably a couple you have heard of, the warcraft/starcraft franchise and the command and conquer franchise, those two rank 2nd and 3rd in the RTS industry, the number one spot belongs to a franchise that for some reason most who don't play RTS games have never heard of: the total annihilation/supreme commander franchise, the isn't even any competition comparing another RTS to them is like comparing checkers to chess.

TA was released in 1997 and completely dominated and defined the RTS genre for years, it had various expansions and mods made and won more awards than any RTS game before or after it even being voted "The number one Real-Time Strategy Game of all time" in 2004 (when it was 7 years old). Sadly after Cavedog inc closed the TA IP went with it but the lead designer returned with the spiritual sequel Supreme Commander which recaptured the feel of the original albeit with different factions. Then came the expansion Forged Alliance which added even more to the game.

And now we have SC2, its newer, bigger, better, Square/Enix have been involved and its going to consoles, its going to be awesome!......No. How its gone this wrong I cannot understand, they have completely removed the "it" from it, I have no other way to describe it, the unit limit is lower, the are less units, the progressing is easier. Basically its been dumbed down severely, presumably so console gamers don't have problems. Ive been an avid PC gamer since 1989 and I do not remember even being this disappointed by a sequel. Not only is it not as good as the first SC or the expansion, its not even as good as the original game from 1997, quite an achievement considering its graphical effects advantage :(

Glad I didn't buy it then. I was very tempted by the Steam sale

TA remains one of my favourite games of all time

I agree that Total Annihilation was groundbreaking at the time and that Supreme Commander 2 was an abomination to the series as C&C4 was to its own.

Cant agree that it beats the Starcraft/Warcraft series though. Even alone Starcraft/Starcraft 2 are fantastic, but ofc this is just opinion.

Sup Com and FA were excellent. FA brought tweaks that were sorely needed to the original.

After reading about number 2 and the nerfing of it, I decided not to buy it. I used to play multiplayer games where the unit caps of 1000 were easily reached, and insane fun!

I was soooooo glad they brought out the demo for SC2 as I would have bought it outright for love of SC:FA.

Thankfully I saved the money and are just waiting for a PC game that deserves my hard earned cash... hopefully deus ex 3 will be as good as it looks.

I did exactly the same thing, Supcom / FA were the first RTS I actually played online in the ladder, and they were epic, was thoroughly looking forward to SC2.

Then I played that demo. What a disappointment!

I enjoyed SC2 campain, but didnt really get into skirmishes/multiplayer cause of lack of large maps.

Well worth getting, just for the campain.

I loved SupCom and FA and after seeing other comments of SupCom2 i decided not to bother and i'm glad thgat i passed. There are certain types of games that NEED to be dont on a PC to get the very best from it. RTS is one.

I'd not say Supcom/TA were the best ever though. Nor that StarCraft/Warcraft are runners up to it.

Im not trying to brag about the results when I link this, but just thought some ppl may be interested by the list:

Top Ten Real-Time Strategy Games of All Time Poll 2004
1: Total Annihilation
2: StarCraft (with the Brood War Expansion)
3: Command & Conquer: Red Alert
4: Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
5: Age of Empires
6: Homeworld
7: Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far
8: Rise of Nations
9: Medieval: Total War
10: Empire Earth

IMO, it's just a completely different game to SupCom... Should have named it something different, then people would see it as a reasonably decent game in its own right, instead of expecting it to be like supcom

edit: misread something :p

but who made that list? and who did they ask? I could go make a list right now and get C&C Generals to the top of the list if i asked the right people. Just because a bunch of folk said its best don't make it so. Just as me saying its wrong dont make it so, its all opinion.

I decided to get it while it was on sale (yes i played the demo before release) and it really doesn't deserve to be connected in any way to TA or SupCom. Its just taken a giant leap towards becoming yet another generic, dumbed down RTS to be played on a console with controls that are **** for the genre.

I am quite enjoying it - and at least they didn't lie about the system requirements unlike SC1. SC2 has just been made more accesible so that more people can play it. To be fair, if you had read the reviews or message boards you would have realised all of this already.
