Just about to order 4 x Kumho KU31

The problem with tyres is that once you've put your money where your mouth is it's hard to come out and say 'Yea i just wasted 400 quid, never mind'. Purchase Justification Syndrome is often subconcious, people dont even know they are doing it.

I spent 6 months genuinelly beleiving my Nokia N97 was a good phone, for example. It wasn't. I had PJS.

Thankfully they're cheap enough not to lose sleep over, and if they really start to annoy me i'll just take them off and advertise them in the freeads or something.

my thoughts exactly when i bought them. they went on a couple weeks before my first trip to nurburg. id been sort of taking it easy on them until then and thought "If theyre pants, ill mince them up this weekend and get another set"

they were only £33 a corner for the first set.

suck em n see. i doubt youll be disappointed as you practically never hear a bad wors against them

maybe thats just your problem tho and everyone else is honest enough to be able to admit if somethings not right. i spent x-amount on an S4 and didnt have to go around pretending i loved it

Yea right - it wont be everyone but it affects a wide variety of opinions. Defending our choices as being the correct ones is human nature. For more, see graphics card forum.

No, this is the opposite, you have to go around pretending you hated it and sold it for that reason because everyone said it was a bottomless moneypit of a cheap S4 when you bought it ;)

that thing cost me £250 for the cambelt, stat and all other associated bits, £x for the two oil changes i did and £40 to fit tyres (that i already had) to the refurbed wheels it came with. that car was miles from a money pit, it was an absolute angel in reality.

it was dull and that didnt suit me and im brave enough to be able to admit to things like that. look at my opinion on the eibach coilovers i had on the golf for example. ill just say it how i see it.

and those kumhos rock!

really? its an audi, which means grip-grip-grip-grip-YAWN. itll fire you down a straight fast, but i cant see the thrill in that. its quick, but not fun.

if im ever around youre part of the world again ill pop by your house and let you take it out for a run. then well have all sorts of revelations when you then start raving on the boards about shonky old modified golfs (on no brand gyppo spec tyres)

i wont even bet a penny on you liking it, but id defy you to take it out for a thrash and not come back and say its a right hoot

back on topic...

I don't understand how tyres can be good on one car and crap on another, surely it's the same rubber on the road?

Also I thought Falken 452's were a good budget performance tyre, do we not think so anymore?

i dont think everyone will agree on something like that (unless were talking about eagles..)

from one car to the next i think its due to weight tbh

I'm not a sufferer.

I've got Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on the Mini and whilst they're ok, they're certainly not amazing like a lot of people seem to think. Sure they're relatively cheap but it's not like you're getting Waitrose performance for Aldi money. You're maybe getting ASDA performance for Aldi money.

Here is a lecture you can use in future to back up your theory, its basically what you have said but backs it up with science and testing, you are spot on.

I fitted 4 KU31's on the old 'bus, fully expecting them to not be as good as the F1 Assymetrics on their previously of course, but since it's on school run duties, optimal performance wasn't high on the list!

Although I can understand people having the "not wanting to admit they bought crappers" syndrome, but that's not me at all, I bought them explicitly expecting them to be crap, but wanting to at least try a set for myself, so I could use my own judgement to see how they stack up, and putting them on the school run wagon seemed a no-brainer at the time.

Oddly, they aren't as bad as I as expecting, and actually since I like to throw the 'ol bus around on the limit when I'm in it on my own, I am finding the KU31's better then my F1A's.. Namely grip levels are as good if not better in the dry, they seem to be much more stable on the limit, and despite expecting wet weather to kill them, they seem pretty decent in the wet. Even responsiveness seems the same, although they are re-inforced (92Y), so not sure if that helps at all, the Bus has the active dampers, and always has this almost artificial very quick initial turn in response (but it's weight obviously overcomes that soon after), and that is still present, I don't find them sloppy at all.

I totally agree that different tyres on different cars behave differently, and more importantly re-inforced versions behave quite differently to non-reinforced since their construction is totally different and inherently you'd expect them to be 'sharper'/less compliant, but at least for me, I can say I've tried the cheap option (hardly 'cheap' though, £90 instead of £130 is only £40 a corner cheaper (225/40/18)) and they do live up to the hype for me, so will get another set on the car once these are through. I can say they are in this size/type noticeably better then the FK452, which my brother had on his 300BHP Bus..

I fitted 4 to the S3 in 225/45/17 and was impressed with the level of grip for the price. The wear rate seems pretty good as well.

The only thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a lot more flex in the sidewalls compared to the Bridgestones I had on there previously; when I shut the door I can see the car "wobble" slightly as the sidewall moves. This must have some sort of effect on the handling but the S3 is renowned for giving quite dead steering feedback so I don't really notice it day to day.

To sum it up I'd have no issue with buying them again but as Demon says, peoples experiences with a certain tyre on different cars can very widely so try and seek advice from owners of the car you drive for a more valid opinion.
