New car

Smooth to drive?

Did you drive some cars which were rough to drive? Did you check you were not driving on cobbles when you did this?

Oh you should try a 1st gen Vauxhall Agila with the 3 cylinder petrol engine.

A friends Dad has one, it's unbelievable ... I've been in it twice to date and the first time I honestly thought the engine had broken ...it sounds and feels (from a passenger perspective) like an engine that's just lost a cylinder ...rather than like one that was meant to be 3 cylinder. It's so rough and sounds and feels out of balance ...the Nissan Micra automatic he had before seems amazingly good by comparison (yes I am serious, relative to the Agila it was very good) ...as bad as some of us say some cars are ...few can be as truly horrible as the Agila 3 pot.

A miss-firing BMW V8 or l6 is much smoother and more pleasant.

The new Civic was released in 2005. The new Focus was released a bit before the new Civic. Both were available in 2006.

Might have just been too expensive then. It was an odd situation, had to get a "like new" car for 10k. Either way I couldn't get a new Civic or Focus and the old Focus I sat in wasn't as nice as the Astra.

I feel I made the right decision anyway.

But still I am not sure, I remember thinking "this is the best looking hatch", if the Civic was out I might not have thought that as I quite like it. hmmm.

The Astra was a very nice looking car when it came out, Remember Clarkson eating pubes on Pizza vividly.

Vs a Yugo 45 it might be fast(ish) but in the real world its slow.

Nothing wrong with that mind, its an ok car if you don't care about cars, i think the Astra looks quite nice but i hate just about everything else about them.

I'm speaking generally, I wouldn't buy an Astra myself as it doesn't tick my boxes, but different people have different boxes, I can't deny that I think it looks nice though, probably like it more than the current shape civic or focus.

Should have gone for a BMW 330i...

My aunt a& uncle has one of these, not my cup of tea however as someone else has said, they have not had to spend a penny on it since they got it about 4 years ago. Seems fairly reliable...saying that it is still only 4 years old so you would hope not much would go wrong...

Have they not bothered to have it serviced then? ...what about the brakes and tyres etc? ...or do you mean a penny outside of the usual maintenance regime?

You didn't really fork out 10k for that Astra did you?

I hope he didn't, an 06 plate 1.6 for £10k ...mmm bargain. I bought that 04 plate Jaguar XJ8 for only £995 more than that :p ...from a main dealer.

Anything wrong with that ? I'm just interested in something that is fast(ish) in a straight line, and something comfy. Handing/feel/dynamics mean bugger all for me.

Where did I say there was anything wrong with that? It's a waste of time arguing with people on the internet who don't care about the things I mentioned.

I think the MK5 Astra is a heck of a lot better looking than the MK6 though, whatever their relative 'merits' may be (ahem, yes I know :p ).

Actually I was thinking they both look pretty ...poor, but the MK5 is the better looking of the two. Pretty is not a term I could really apply to any car in the Vauxhall line-up.

Nothing wrong with an Astra for those that don't think they are Tiff Needell.

Its a nice colour too... Shame it doesnt have the bigger wheels... but hey, its clean, tidy to look at, and it er... moves along the road.

However, the going rate for these for that year is £5-6K, so I sincerely hope the OP did NOT pay £10K for it. If he did then he was ripped a new bottom hole by the stealer, who probably didnt even lube up.

My father-in-law has one (well, a 5-door version). We borrowed it for a week when he was on holiday, it was a horrible car to drive, absolutely woeful.

Still, they do look pretty good and if you're happy that's all that matters. Enjoy :)

lol, u gotta be pretty stupid to get run over by a train.

Its not like they just creep up silently and pounce!

Edit:- I mean... you can feel the tracks vibrate at least...

No sympathy from me, apart from the driver, bit of a shame.

Im happy with the size of my penis, I dont have to post pictures of my boat.

lol, why are people creaming themselves over a bland BMW diesel estate?!

Its about as desirable as herpes.

I can only lol.

LOL @ this. More money than sense comes to mind tbh.

Waste of a reasonably nice (if a little mundane) car.

Woeful compared to what? In what way woeful?

See things like this confuse me, these sort of cars are just, well cars, they are transport.

They aint supposed to excel at anything are they, they look ok, drive ok, whats so terribly wrong with them?

Woeful compared to what?

Pretty much every other car in it's class that I have driven.

A few of the reasons I didn't like it:

- Driving position.
- Underpowered engine.
- Build quility.

I can't believe it's "woeful" compared to a 20 odd year old Volkswagon.

I'm not comparing it to my Golf, that would be utterly daft.
