New car

I am thinking CarCraft. :o

I hope you're wrong about that, I really do. 7 days FREE insurance ...and they open late! ...and you can pay in SO MANY ways! ....oh wow ....I wonder if they will take payment in livestock ?

Pretty much every other car in it's class that I have driven.

I'm not comparing it to my Golf, that would be utterly daft.

Ok then fair enough, although given what you have done to the VW, I'd be very surprised if it didn't at least handle better.

Blackhawk47 and Moeks please read the thread properly before this descends into something it's not. ;)

Sorry to ruin the speculation but Jonnybmac is the OP and:
It was the best looking hatch in 2006 when I got mine.
So I don't think Jonnybmac spent £10k in 2010 for that car! :)

Whilst in terms of driving, it is worse than a lot of the competition, it is far from woeful.

Woeful is probably a strong word, and in fairness to it a lot of the things I didn't like can apply to pretty much any 'modern generation' car, things like the silly indicators, the feeling of numbness and disconnection, the over-assisted brakes.

Build quality was pretty shocking too, certain things feel like they are going to break in your hand.

Also bear in mind that my Golf isn't my main car, our main family chariot is the Estima which is fully loaded with toys like dual-zone digital climate control etc, and the Astra was seriously lacking in equipment in comparison.

I'm not comparing the Astra to the Estima either of course, I'm just trying to point out why driving that Astra for a week wasn't very pleasant.

Lol why is that Jane woman stalking me!

Most strange, Im taken hunni sorry!

My point was that for people that just want a new, clean, tidy, "reliable" car, who don't want a Supra, or an EVO with 650BHP on tap etc etc then an Astra makes a reasonably good car.

Lets be serious here... you would not spec a blade server or a Dual Socket Quad Xeon monster for your mum or sister to browse the web on, you would recommend a generic, rubbish, slow PC, that gets the job done and no more.

There is no problem with the choice of car, nor generally speaking, its reliability OR performance (and yes, its woeful, but not as literally life sappingly woeful as the 1.4)

I have driven a staggeringly large amount of modern cars, and while most are totally devoid of character, feel, dynamics etc... things have certainly moved on, and £5K (I hope) on an Astra is certainly not the end of the world as we know it, and could almost be classified as a sensible choice for a young person on a budget.

I'm not really sure this needs to be about the car, but should be more about whether he got good value for money, and i really hope for his sake he did NOT pay £10K for it. Having said that, why are people saying he could have got a flipping V8 Jag for the same money?!! One is a clapped out gas guzzler that will cost him limbs to fix, the other is a cheap, light, run around, that looks modern and tidy....

OP, was it £10k ? You could have bought speedboat for that!?! LULZZ LOL ETC

Nice pointless analogy there.

No one is suggesting a fire-breathing supercar, all that has been suggested is that as a car to enjoy on any level other than "how it looks", there are far better available either in the same class or similar price points, whilst remaining "normal".

To go by your computer hardware analogy, what has actually been suggested is that you wouldn't go out and buy a Q6600 now, when an i5 could be had for the same money and outperform it in every way.

Way to be wilfully pedantic when you knew exactly was I was trying to say....

Its horses for courses...... I am trying to make the point that the Astra isnt a bad looking car, and it looks neat.. and modern, all things considered. It does what HE wants a car to do.

Hell, I would probably even have one as a daily driver, not that I would have any sort of fun in it whatsoever, but that's why we/I have my weekend cars!

yes but there are other cars that will do the above whilst being MORE reliable, Hold their value more etc..

Assuming he didnt pay £10K and paid the market rate of £5K or £6K what do you think these would be?

OP has low milage too....

All the generic hatches I can think of would come in at around the same market cost (NOT £10K as that is LOLZ etc) but would be about the same type of car.

Point still stands...10k for an Astra even in 2006 seems a tad high - presuming that he brought it second hand and its not a VXR or something. :o
