I'm in Ireland for a mates 21st which should be good. Only problem there's no Orange network in Ireland and all 3 of us are on Orange!

What's the crack?

If you're on UK O2 (as I am) and you go to Ireland (or near border) it'll show as O2 IE. This is still normal UK roaming rates, the same as I got in Israel, USA, Canada, France etc.

Same as Vodafone, it'll be Vodafone IE.

Sometimes you can be on O2 UK and it show up as Meteor or something. You'll all just get charged Orange roaming rates whatever.

Yep I don't have roaming set up, I'm here for 2 nights and It takes 24 hours to set up...

Oh well what an excuse for not textin the girlfriend.

Thanks for the info.

You are in a foreign country. You can therefore roam on a foreign network and you will pay your mobile operators published roaming rates.

Itll most likely cost you to receive texts as well, so you might want to turn your phone off for the 2 days

It is most likely a good idea that you do not dispense advice on a subject it is clear you know nothing about. There will be no charge for receiving texts, only for receiving calls.

Orange is known as metor in the Republic. Tho since it is not part of the UK its the same as going to France or Germany. You still get international rates. Depending where you go there are parts of Co. Donegal I can get 1bar on Orange as far across the border as Letterkenny and convoy. Most of the time tho my phone goes to O2 Ireland or vodafone automatically. Need to check the settings in prefered networks

Just to hijack the thread briefly, on a Vodafone contract, will I be affected at all when I'm in Ireland?

If you stay within NI then its like being in the UK Mainland still i.e. non-roaming so all package benefits apply.

Once you cross into Republic then you will be roaming as if you went to Europe etc...

Be wary tho - If you are within NI but near the border, switch your phone to manual network selection as it is possible that it will jump to a ROI network in areas of poor NI coverage....
