Something I realised this morning when I woke up... oh **** Tax is up tomorrow.. no problem I thought I have my Insurance and MOT somewhere i'll drop to the post office.. couldn't find my insurance.. oops.

Now to me it's always been.. you get caught without a valid disc = screwed but i've just checked the Direct Gov site after ordering it online (Having lost my insurace certs) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10021514

Apparently there IS now infact a 5 day grace period for not displaying as long as you've ordered it before the disc or SORN expires.

Handy :)

On a side note, seeing as you've just reminded me the Mondeo is up today.

If I go to the Post Office tonight, will they issue one from the 1st July? Its been many years since I've taxed a vehicle at the post office.

Do you guys not get the reminder that allows you to renew online?

Much less hassle that having to go down the PostOffice and you don't even have to look out your documents. Simples.

I normally do it online, but I'm snowed under in paperwork between work and the accident, so it escaped me this time - I will be renewing at the post office.

Yup, but I don't get paid till the 23rd so I didn't get chance to sort it and because i've been on nights the past 4... I forgot :(

You'd get a disc that expires end of Dec as your current one is only valid until end of June.

I don't think you can tax it start of July and have it expire end of Jan as then you'd be getting a month free as that disc wouldn't be valid until the 1st of August.

So with the existing tax running out end of June you'd have a month 'untaxed'.

I've just been to tax it, and it does indeed expire at the end of December. That would mean it starts on the 1st of July.

I ordered a new one for the Neon online.

Not as bad as what happened with my old Xantia, got all the documents out to tax it, and discovered the MOT expired 6 weeks earlier.

Got a new one yesterday, only 6 months cuz all i can afford n skint, waited in line for 20 mins at the post office in lunchbreak, what a waste of time, deffo doing it online next time!!!

Sorry I misunderstood :)

Whenever you would have purchsed that disc it would be valid from July 1st to December 30th, the dates are fixed I think whilst it's on the road :)

I thought you meant if you buy it in July rather than June will you 'get' a whole extra month.

If that makes sense, rubbish explanation, I know what I mean though :P

I bought my Tax online yesterday & was well chuffed on how much easier it is.
just sling in your details & it confirms your MOT & Insurance then goes on to the payment option, Brilliant service.
As for the 5 day grace period who cares the car is Taxed.

Yeah done this a couple of years now, dunno why you would do it any other way.

I can't believe a lot of people don't do it online, it takes 2 mins, and no miserable PO 'official' to deal with, no queues etc.

I'm glad they've finally added a 5 day lee-way to it, but I've pretty much always done it at the last minute, and driven around for a day or so without a valid tax disc on display, as I'm such a rebel ;) Hell, I've bought tax 2 days after the fact online, and was surprised that it let me with zero fuss..

For me i dont go to the house at which the car is registered very often, and i am always around in the day times, so i can visit a PO very easily and never need to queue. Buying tax at a quiet country PO is really not a big deal at all. Means you can pay cash too which is a large benefit to a lot of people.
