Phoned up my insurance company today (Aviva) to cancel my policy because they had quoted me a ridiculous sum (£2978 12/months compaired to Admiral's £557) to change my car from a Focus ST to a BMW 330ci.

They told me, sure we can do that, there's a charge of 40 quid!, they said its to cover the cost of work done on the account when it was started, isn't that what the deposit is for!

After a few heated moments of words crossing back and forth they then tell me, there is a 48 quid refund due also, so the fee is nullified. Why couldnt they just say that in the first place.

Ofcourse it takes 20 days for the refund to appear. Anyway cancelled my DD with them because to be quiet honest I don't trust them at all.

If they mess me about, I may just have to start charging them "Administrative Fee's"

Wait, you're being charged more to change from an ST to a 330?

When I was doing quotes, albeit for a saloon, the BMW was nearly always cheaper.

It's funny when they read out silly figures like £2,300 on the phone and keep a perfectly straight voice, as though they expect you to find it acceptable :D

Whoever manages to figure out how insurance companies price their premiums would make a killing I swear by selling that info to us punters

they would make a kill but lose a lot more as other companies could just take their rates a little below the other companies

I would have thought wales would be major incident zone with all those sheep, we just got loads of tractors and combine harvestors!

the sheep are tied up in some farmers bedroom so the roads should be safe ;)

Ye they do. I phoned up my current insurance co as their renewal price was a joke, after going through and changing some details "to make it cheaper" she quotes me a higher price than my renewal, asking if I want to go for that. So I told them to cancel my renewal...a guess what turns up in the post today! My new insurance certificate from them with additional charges for admin fees!! Now I have been on hold for 10mins waiting to speak to someone that wont have a clue how to fix it.

Makes me laugh too.

"That comes to £3300, how would you like to pay?"

Erm, I don't actually. I said 1.6 Civic not Lamborghini Gallardo.

Which would be understandable for someone with convictions and a history of accidents.

Perhaps they just dont want somebody with your risk profile? Infact there is no perhaps about it - they dont, so they quote a comical price. They can't lose, either you go away, which they are happy with, or you pay them £3k, which they are also happy with.
