Colne.... Up Norf.
Looking to upgrade from the E46 2004 320d ES touring in the next few months, id prefer comfy over sporty, but i also want a capable engine, Id like satnav, leather, cruise, climate, ipod and bluetooth... Im hoping for £4,500 for mine and have £8,000 spare. I no longer need a diesel so will be looking at the petrol tourings.

A look on Pistonheads shows that for the budget of ~£12500 my choices are;

E46 330i Touring
E91 320i Touring
E61 530i Touring

What would you say is the best car at up to this price range? Should i be looking at the SE or Sport spec/trim. I know the sport will be a harsher ride, but, from what i remember Rg-Tom has/had a 330i Sport and that wasn't too hard when he took me for a passenger ride.

Thanks for any help, advice. :)

If you are happy enough with an E46 330i Touring then get one of these but don't spend £12.5k one, you can get them for much less. As in 4k less!

What are you after, though? If you just want 'some modern comfortableish BMW' then an E91 320i is quite a lot of newish car for the money, though the performance is particularly average as it's a 4 cylinder 2 litre engine with only 150bhp. You are unlikely to get decent M Sport variants of either E91 or E61 for under £12.5k so I'd be looking at the SE for better value, though the E61 in SE guise is a horrible looking car.

I like the E46 and would prefer a mint E46 rather than a rough E91... but, i wasnt sure if id be missing out of superior interior toys and what nots (iDrive?).

Only E91's with Navigation will have iDrive. E91's dripping with spec are few and far between at the bottom of the market and even rarer in 320i guise, it tends to be the higher end models that had the options list raided for toys.

That does look pretty damn good for the money. Leaves me just as confused as when i started though unfortunately, old high-spec or newer low-spec. I suppose ill need to get test drives in a few and see which i prefer. Thanks so far though. :)

There will doubtless be people who will point out that the 320i is pointless and that you should get a 330i or something and in theory these people are correct. But an 07 plate 330i or 335i with Navigation, Bluetooth, etc etc in M Sport form is almost £20,000.

That car is £11,000.

It's a choice you make - you can have a smaller engined base spec current shape car, or you can go for a large engined high specification previous generation car which may not be all that different to your current car when you are just plodding along the M5 or whatever.

How very dare they!
