Hello!

I have a list of things i want to do in life, places to go etc. I'm going to start off by planning a trip to see the Northern Lights.

I'm just wondering if anyone has already done this and would be willing to give me any feedback on places/times/cost etc.

Thanks :)
Adam.

anywhere rurual in northern scandinavia or or rural in iceland will be a good place to see them. Aslong as its a clear night with not much light pollution it will look immense. Perhaps try to find a large lake too as when they show it may reflect on the water too

Yes i have seen them and its was fantastic to see. I would recommended it to anyone to go and see. Nothing else quite compares. Yes photos dont do it jutice.

I saw them in Iceland during a school trip well over 3 years ago around october time, while we were staying in a cabin in the middle of now where. It was near the glacier that is now gone because of the volcano.

We just missed the season where you can see them (we went to Lapland in the Artic circle) bet it must be an amazing sight

You know, I'm Finnish and I've never traveled up to Lapland to see the Northern Lights. :p It's like the one thing that tourists want to do in Finland lol.

That and Ski/Snowboard , Was the first time I have visited Finland, didnt get to see much of it, we flew straight up to the airport, cant remember which one it was, but it was about a 45 minute drive to our resort in Yllas Lapland

Shame I didnt see the lights, but I still had great fun skiing and riding skidoo's :)

our hosts had a welcome BBQ for us, then told us stories about the Finnish using Raindeer antlers ground down in to dust to improve their love making, a bit like Viagra

Is this really true ???

Yes, I saw them about 6 years ago from the plane window when flying transatlantic to New York in November.

It was an awesome sight.

The Northern Lights really are a remarkable sight so if you get the chance to see them then I'd highly recommend it. If the conditions are just right then you could even see them up in the very North of Scotland but the nearer you get to the Arctic Circle the more likely you are to be able to see them - I've seen them a couple of times up in the North of Finland (only about 3 miles away from the outer edge of the Arctic Circle).

I've been in Northern Norway and Russia (around the 69th parallel) for a fortnight and didn't see anything :(

I'm glad to hear you had fun! I personally hate skiing, sauna, snow and cold. I was so not meant to be born there.

I've heard that tale as well, and I honestly can't say if it's true or not. I would imagine if it were true, you'd find it happening only in Lapland, among Sami people. People in Helsinki or other actual cities certainly don't do that. But again, I can't say if it's true of Sami people either as I've never been there myself.
