Hello

I am buying a HTC Desire soon from a private sale and although I'm no technology noob when it comes to PCs, games, etc.., I have no experience with modern phones and Android.

Before I buy the phone I'm going to be giving it a THOROUGH looking over and test, but I wonder are there any classic signs I can look for that something might be a bit dodgy ?

Cheers

I dont think there are any 'fake' HTC Desires around actually. So provided it looks like it should, you'll be fine :p

No fake desires eh ?

Well that's a load off my mind :)

As I say I'm going to be giving it a right good looking at before buying as I'm picking it up, so there's no worries about getting any horrible shocks by a dodgy one turning up one day in the mail.

nope, seen fake samsungs too

loads of fake satios and x10s too. some are using full copies of the original casing too but then are running low res screens and 400mhz cpus etc

OP just watch a youtube review or try a real desire in a shop. a fake will usually be running stock android or atleast very different software. should be obvious once youve turned it on.

Just give it a good look over, use a few of the apps, make sure the hardware buttons work.... make sure everything is responsive and looks professional (ie not cheap knock-off).

Never used an Android phone before, but I've seen and read enough about the desire to know that "responsive" should be the key word of the day :)

Usually they are named slightly different also, due to untrue belief if its not exactly the same then its not a copy. Like the copied footie shirts over here in SE Asia a lot of them don't have the make on them. So nike etc ect can't prosecute them.

If its true I doubt it !

check the sticker on the back, if it looks misaligned or out of place then it's going to be questionable.

I'm sure you'll find high res desire pictures online too to be fully familiar or visit a phone shop to see too!

Thanx for all the replies guys (and gals?)

Actually, one more thing a little off topic since I've already stated I'm an android noob, are there any VPN apps ?

I will be going to China very soon and it would be fab if the Desire was fully functional and all that :)

Cheers

Well I got the Desire and it's NOT fake and it IS awesome :)

I've never really had a smartphone before so all the interconnectivity between stuff is blowing me away.
Like using the layer augmented reality app which can then switch to google maps and stuff like that.

The google astronomy thing is fantastic too.
Not very useful but being able to point the phone and see what you're looking at and even searching for stuff and then the phone directs you where to look with a GPS style pointer. AMAZING !!! :D

on a sour note tho, the first time I took the phone out of the house I now have a teeny 1mm scratch on the screen. Must have been something hard between the polishing cloth and the glass :(
Oh well, these things happen !!

Heheh

Seriously, even this little 1mm mark that can only be seen at certain specific angles in the right light would have caused me to lose my ****ing mind as little as 2 or 3 years ago.

But I think I've mellowed out a lot. I'm gonna have this phone for like 3 years at least and there's no way on earth it's remaining perfect in that time.

So I just think..... meh..... :D

Well like I say, I've never owned a phone like this before and .... you know..... hindsight is wonderful :)

Might get one now tho !!

Ummmmm...... where would someone go about getting one of those on the high street ?

The only thing you can do is check any/all high street shops that sell mobile phones.....

If there anything like over here in guernsey, then all they have is iphone accessories :(
