Another new(er) PS3 slim model incoming...

Hey,

New PS3 models outed by FCC

The original slim was CECH-2001 (CECH-2003 in the UK), and the latest revision which made it into he wild last month was CECH-2101 (CECH-2103). I posted about that here.

CECH-2501 / CECH-2503 seems like a bigger jump than the last revision - I wonder what they've changed? This grabbed my attention:

...interesting since a debug unit is typically only required when there's been a change in the chips on the motherboard

Maybe they've gone with a monolithic design like the new Xbox 360 S. Could we see a price drop coinciding with its release? I sold my phat PS3 and was about to splurge on a newer slim but this news has got me thinking whether it would be worth waiting 2-3 more months (I can use my parents' PS3 in the mean time!).

i doubt it'll look any different on the outside. They only just started making money on the hardware, changing it up now just doesnt make sense. i'd imagine it'll be something internal thats changed enough to need a revised number. Its possible that the Cell and RSX are now combined but i find that unlikely also, as it was only a month or so ago that the RSX was dropped down to a 45nm process.

In addition, it certainly wont be anything to make the output of the hardware any different since it'd only alienate the existing userbase.

it'll be interesting to see what is different once one is stripped down.

your living in cloud land if you think this is gonna be any different to what they have out in retail at the moment.
its no doubt just a few things changed or made smaller internally to keep manufacturing costs down

It's just a new model, the fat PS2 had about 11 of them, no different to end user.

There was talk of a 500GB PS3 with Wireless N a while ago, maybe wait till GDC in mid August to be sure?

remember what the Sony PR machine was saying for aaaages before the slim + price drop...?

Granted, the momentum is with Sony at the moment, but I think the new 360 S will put the pressure on slightly.

Yeah wireless-N would be great, and a logical step forward give that the new 360 S has this as standard. What I really want are rear USB ports, so here's hoping!!

Well of course there's something different on the inside you dufus, it's a new hardware revision! Even the other guy agrees with that - did you bother to fully read his post?! He was stressing the fact there would be no major functional changes.

Knowing sony, if it is a hardware change its only being put in place to reduce manufacturing cost! like what they did with the psp.
