A six-year-old girl died after becoming trapped in an electric gate in Manchester as her mother watched on helplessly.

Emergency services were called to the entrance to flats off Maine Road in Moss Side at about 1930 BST on Monday.

Semelia Campbell was caught between the rolling gate and a brick post.

Her mother Judith Gilroy tried to stop the gate with her fob key and then switched off the electricity but she was unable to save her.

A police officer smashed the motor on the gate to stop it closing further and pulled her out, a police spokesman said.

The youngster went into cardiac arrest and paramedics tried to help her.

They took her to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital where she died a short time later, the ambulance service said.

I don't understand how someone gets crushed by an electric gate. Clutch anyone?

Because if you make the gate stop when it meets a certain level of resistance thieves etc would just stick something in one end so it didn't shut fully and then revisit later for easy access.

They would have to open the gate first though so they would already have had access, I would rather be robbed than crushed to death.

or just stuck something in as the gate was closing after someone drove out.

Then come back at night for the other cars.

Most of these deaths are from in proper use of the gate, or people being idiots and not supervising their children.

I worked on a chemical site for a while in the NW where there is a train track running accross the front entrance and an electic gate that closes off the entrance whenever a train goes past.

I was told not to go near it when it moved as someone had already lost an arm when it was being installed.

It must have weighed a couple of tons though.

ones at work will stop and reopen. Making it pretty obvious some one has tried to stop the gate.

they normally have IR detectors at footlevel, if you break the line the motor stops and retracts the gate. takes mabye a second to kick in. can hear it 'click' when you break the line.

thats how they work at my office.

tragic for the mother. :(

We had a gate exactly like that at work. Once i tried to beat it shut while driving in it touched the side of my car (Rubbed edge I touched) and it stopped but didnt go anywhere for awhile. About 20 mins later we managed to get it to starrt closing again.

Sounds like the gate had a fault.
