Girl crushed to death by electric gate.

wow thats crazy i know someone who got there fingers caught in one of those automatic doors a lot of blocks of flatts have some idiot porter closed the door and it severed his fingers off.

he never got any money out of the council either....(council owned block of flatts + stupid porter not looking what hes doing)

I must admit, I lol'd @ this.

Damn kids, always think they are so clever. The lesson here is dont play with someone elses gates.

So where do we draw the line between kid's own fault and parent's lack of supervision?

3 years old? 6? 9?

I'd say if you're old enough to see a gate closes, then get the hell out of its way.

I'm not saying this was the case in this bit of news, it was distressing imagining how events played out.

now let me think at what age do we get some eyesight......:p

anyway stupid accident that shouldnt have happened (should have had a safety cut off) but credit to the police officer for atleast attempting to rescue her.

Rip :( bad way to go and so young. How did the police officer arrive so fast assuming the gate was already closing

jesus, I saw the thread title before but didn't look in, this is on the new estate at the back of my house, I'm away at the moment so hadn't seen/heard anything about it!

Was this gate just for cars as it would seem so? If so she shouldnt have been trying to sneak through basically, stupidity.

It's a 6 year old kid, tell me you didn't make any stupid decisions at 6?

Unfortunately for her this one will be her last mistake.

Can't imagine how the mother feels, it's horrible.

:(

Our gates at work stop if something gets between them, then reopen. Is a bit of a pain in the ass if you're last one out and have to stop and make sure they close properly, but stops stuff like this happening.

I've just put exactly the same gate in at a hospital in Kent there are several protection measures, IR either side of the gate primaraly to tell the gate when to shut after a car has entered, the pedestrian fob only open the gate by 1200mm, and the leading edges and the back egdes have touch bars so that if anything gets trapped it immediatly stops, the gate cost circa £20k and all the added protection cost £5k as we are dealing with the public we went for all the protection measures we could.

Being a developer they probably went for the standard gate rather than spending the extra

Sad news :(

Our gates at work only stop if the control room pushes the stop button - but it's high security building so it's understandable and we don't have kids around here. The gates are anti ram, and also weigh several tonnes, you'd be a gonner if you were trapped and they didn't notice you.

Last time I checked electric gates aren't exactly fast moving? The girl must have tried a last minute dash to get through and got caught?

Thats harsh, do you have kids? 6 year olds do not see the obvious danger. As a parent you are constantly saying to your kids 'dont do that', 'dont touch it' and dont put that in your mouth'. Constantly day in and day out you are telling your kids not to do those things and they still do it! You end up saying things like 'don't come crying to me when you fall over'

It would not surprise me if that poor girls mum had on occasion told her not to go near those gates.

It's bloody hard being a parent, it's the hardest thing I have ever done.

Because if you make the gate stop when it meets a certain level of resistance thieves etc would just stick something in one end so it didn't shut fully and then revisit later for easy access.
A thief just needs to put a heavy object between the gate and the wall like a small cylinder block to stop the gate from closing, no matter how much force is pushing against the gate.
