AMD Phenom II X4 or core i5 750?

Assuming you go for the 955 v the i5750,

AMD;
Cheaper
all the performance you really need for gaming, either option will be gpu limited in all but the most extreme cases.
Probably edges it if you do not intend to overclock.
<possible upgrade path onto bulldozer>

I5;
Faster, but not mind blowingly so.
If you overclock you can get a far higher one than on the phenom, overclocking with a good airflow case and cooler would see the value for the extra you pay appear.

Let's pretend Phenom II X4 955BE is as fast as i5 750 at stock speed (ignore the fact i5 750 is faster for a second)...

Phenom II X4 955BE 3.2Ghz overclock to 4.0GHz is 25% overclock, whereas i5 750 2.66GHz overclock to 4.0GHz is 50% overclock.

And let's not forget that's no guarantee that the Phenom II X4 will definitely reach 4.0GHz. The chances of Phenom II X4 reaching 4.0GHz is probably as high as i5 750 reaching 4.15-4.2GHz at best.

Having said that, a i5 750 build might not be worth it now, as you can build a i7 920 build for just a little bit more.

It somewhat depends on what you do with the system as well, the Intel is the faster number cruncher ...but you wont truly realise much of an advantage from the I5 unless you overclock it. If you just game, it doesn't really make much difference ...pick the one you like the sound of more ...do you prefer blue or green ? :p

I would say this though, it might be worth considering what Bulldozer may or may not have to offer, now as far as we have all be lead to believe ...you should be able to drop that in and go with a good AM3 board ...and just sell the PII on ...you will never have this option with a socket 1156 system. Weather or not it is worth it I really have no idea, but we are close enough now that it's worth giving a second thought to I think.
