Your typical unemployed day

To all those reading this I presume you are unemployed or employed and not working :p

I was made redundant just over a week ago and wondered what your typical day was like. There are many people unemployed in the UK, some that have been unemployed all their lives. I really dont know how they cope with not having a job and wonder how they pass (or waste) the time (/lives)

Heres me at the moment -

9 - Get up, get breakfast and watching some tv, usually news or sky sports/news

10 - Search online for any new job posts, fill out applications, checking forums etc

12 - More tv, at the moment I am getting back into scrubs and havent yet stooped as low as jeremy kyle!

2 - Another quick search before exercise, go for a run, weights/general exercise in house then shower

3 - This is the part where I get bored as I am fired up for something but dont really know what so just end up lazing around until mates return from work at 5.30 (probably why I am writing this!)

Not every day is like this, I have been speaking to agencies, rang about a job today, go into town for whatever reason, walk to the shops...

I really dont see how people can go on without working. Having said that when I was working I felt like had been mentally raped at the end of some days. I would be knackered and love for a day off doing nothing. I have quickly learnt that this is only fun if you also work!

You only look for work online?

Oh dear...

Two 'quick searches' online isn't really what I'd call looking for work. That's bordeline dole scrounging right there....

This, you hardly ever get responses from emails. Unless it's an on-line application straight to the employer. visit agencies and stuff in person and try random companies asking if they have any jobs.

I don't think it's quite black and white really. In my case, they only responses I ever got were from online. In fact, I found my current job online. I handed out in excess of a hundred flyers, applied for a multitude of jobs via agencies and shop flyers, but nothing.

While it is true that only using one method cuts your chances significantly, I found that, personally, handing out CVs did nothing. And applying online I got significantly more responses.

Get up ~ 11
Head to gym ~12
Come from gym ~4 ish if I have a sauna
Then the rest of the day is eating/internetlooking for part time jobs :p (Im a student). I cant even be bothered to play xbox anymore, tis a terrible shame.

Thing is how do you apply online? Most on-line agencies just want numbers for the books. Proper applications on-line gets great responses.

Handing out cvs also has to be targeted and invested interest and asking questions.

True - I applied through websites for the companies themselves, or through jobcentre postings, or indeed, through job agencies, like jobsinkent.com etc.

I guess the point really is that you've got to take advantage of all your options, I'm sure there's plenty of people who hear nothing online but get great response when handing in CVs/engaging an employer, etc.

There are times that I miss being unemployed, the freedom and surplus of time mainly - but have a job is so...fulfilling. I hope those who are unemployed find themselves a decent job. :)

The point I was trying to make was... don't sit on your arse all day fapping, playing xbox then going online for an hour and looking at the same jobs over and over again and think you are job searching, you are not.

Sometime between 9am and 12pm: Wake up and have breakfast, then watch some TV
Mid-afternoon: Check emails, search for jobs, quick browse of forums and other sites
Post computer time: Shopping/cleaning/whatever needs doing around the house
Rest of day: Games/TV/whatever else I feel like
Sometime between 12am and 4am: Bed

when i was unemployed my day was like

9am wake up and watch jeremy kyle while nomming on toast
10am check job websites
11am check job board in job centre
12pm search through the local paper
1pm lunch
2pm fill out any applications or sending out cvs
3pm-3am fapping and xbox

luckily i got a job in december, all that fapping was killing me :p

it is hard to find a job though i was made redundant last year may, i didn't get a job untill about jully, i was signed up to 5-6 agencies in my local area, had a couple of temporary jobs cleaning/warehouse work, i must have applied for about 100 jobs.

trust me playing pc does get booring. my original day consisted of
8.30 get up
9-11 am apply for jobs/ phone agencies for any temp/perm work.
11-1pm go on pc blow stuff up.
1-2.30 go to town look for jobs.
4pm - 12.30am watch movies/ play games.

doing this 5 times a week get tedious.

Why don't you just get a job in McDonalds or something why you are looking for decent work - or even temp somewhere?

06:00 = Up
07:27 = Train to work
08:15 = Work
16:49 = Train home
17:35 = Home

17:35-23:00 = Girlfriend/TV/Xbox/Food/Etc...

This would be a good time to give more constructive criticism.

Job searching its better if you can treat it a bit more like a job.

Spend more time on it than playing games.

Taylor your CV and cover letter to the job you're applying for. One size does not always fit all.

Ask yourself if your writing is as good as it can be. Perhaps you need to rewrite some of your sentences so they shine. The cover letters and personal statements that I got responses from have gone through over a dozen edits and drafts.

Depends what type of work your looking for.

It's pretty much the only way of finding a new IT contract for myself.

Besides, applying gets you into agency databases and you likely to be contacted directly.

Shame so many companies have to use douchebag agencies now...

You need to understand that searching for a job is a job in itself. That also means that you should treat it as an 8h a day activity. Looking at jobs for a couple of hours a day and sending an application or two is not going to get you anywhere soon.

You really need to rump up your efforts to match your expectations.

The amount of times I hear people say similar things but when they've been out of work they flat out refuse to do a job "below" what they did previously.

Most people who say this type of thing are full of it.

If you would personally work at McD's when out of work - fair play - but most people just use it as another reason to talk down to others.

I've already worked for McDonalds - I never want to work there or any similar jobs again

If they don't "need" the money then why would you do that? In my opinion working in a place like that is not worth the effort associated, unless totally desperate. Its doubtful as to whether most of us would do that.

If I have a day off with no plans I would get bored not soon after I had breakfast!

I would also feel like i wasted a day, I would at least go into town to do some shopping at minimum, even if just for the walk.

So did I. When at College.

Down right horrible job. Minimum wage, screamed at by mentals for no reason, dealing with nutter drunks at night...smelling like Bracknell scab.
