hey guys, so going to uni, and my 3 year old conroe PC is kinda outdated so my parents are allowing me to buy a new one :)

Ive been given a MAX budget of 1400 pounds!

I already have a disk drive, PSU and samsung f3 1tb harddrive!

what i need for this are the following!

CPU
mobo
RAM
SDD
GPU
case
monitor

oh and a nice CPU fan!

I have caught my eye on the OCUK overclocked bundles but if i can get it cheaper and get 4ghz myself then sure ;p

i need the case to be as small and quiet as possible so it isnt TOO hard to travel with! (don't want a micro atx case thing) :D

I will be using it for gaming, hd encoding, watching HD movies, etc!

thanks a lot in advanced since i know you guys are pro at it!

Even got £100 to spare. :p

Hex core for your encoding.

fast SSD with a SATA and USB3.0 motherboard.

brilliant monitor with a fast graphics card.

what is your psu? make and model

Ah I missed the part about encoding. :) In which case Stulid's build would be a bit faster for that but the i7 would be slightly faster in games.

I still think the i7 920 would be a better choice than the 1090T.

In my opinion, even IF 1090T at 4.0GHz can finish encoding a few mins faster than a i7 920 at 4.0GHz, for gaming the i7 920 at 4.0GHz would be better, as it usually offer around a 3-10fps higher minimum frame frate than the Phenom II, on a 5870 in the slightly more CPU demanding games (i.e. Crysis, Crysis Warhead).

I'd rather take few mins longer (it probably won't even be that much longer) on encoding on the i7 920 at 4.0GHz, than having 5-10fps minimum frame rate less in some games on the 1090T at 4.0GHz .

hey guys, thanks for the fast replies!

My PSU is an enermax eg701ax-ve which i would assume is still capable in running that sort of setup?

and I think the i7 is a definite since the gaming would be priority over the encoding so yeh :) also allows me to have the 6 gigs of RAM :)

the psu has two 6pin pci-e connectors, so its still ok.

an i7 isnt that much faster in games, a i5 750 is faster than a i7 930 at games.

check out some 1090T charts,

For this particular test, they managed minimum frame rate of 42fps with the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R with the overclocked i7 920/930/980X.

The results of the minimum 35fps with the i7...it was done on a Asus P6D Deluxe if I'm not mistaken.

wheres it say 42? you cant even read!

I see a standard clocked 920 at 40.

a 930 at 43.

overclocked I see 58 and 63 for the 920/930, with the overclocked i5 between them!!!!! seriously where do you get the numbers from?

Ah **** quoted the wrong link. Was meant to quote the Crysis test:

Fixed the previous post.

And for the test on Fallout 3 2560x1600 Max:

I still think it is the 9600GT bottleneck, not CPU...as it is highly unlikely for different CPU of different architecture different speed to have the identical 58fps, whereas as GPU bottleneck would be fairly common to have identical frame rate even with different CPU of difference speed, as long as the CPU is not bottlenecking the GPU.

rofl serious arguements going here :P so my PSU is alright to keep?
You PSU should be fine.
