Your typical unemployed day

beggers can't be choosers, and hate people who say they cannot do a cleaning job, when it's only for 2-3 hrs. it least it's a bit more cash in your wallet

You can understand people not wanting to do this sort of thing for 2-3 hours a week because financially they'll be no better off than claiming benefit.

But...

When I was unemployed I would have taken anything even if it was just one hour a week. Because as has been said already. Job > No job.

University qualification are not all up to scratch (mine included) and there are only so many jobs at the high end. Fewer people should be going to university in the first place.

of course it's that black and white, you take what you can get, doesn't mean you have to stay there. Why should the state fund you because you want to do X, what happens if you never ever get X job.

And how is it poll pot ideology,

I think people should be given a fair chance to go for a job they're qualified to do. For which I have no problem with welfare to support since if they get the job it'll go back into the economy.

If individuals are not getting their break...then, of course, they should downgrade their expectations.

Btw, this is coming from someone who didn't go to Uni so there's no bias opinion here.

Doesn't working odd hours here and there mess up claiming for dole money?

I know my dad recently went through a phase of being better off not working.

It doesn't mess it up, but it may work out that you're not getting any extra money for working than you would for not working.

So your dad wouldn't have been 'better off' not working. He simply chose not to because it wouldnt have gotten him any (or much) extra cash.

When claiming JSA, you are allowed to work up to 16 hours I think it is. But... you will only receive enough to make up your normal JSA allowance on top of your wages.

You should have say 3-6months to get the job you want, after that you accept anything.

Actually, the job centers already do this. Once you've began claiming they take a list of jobs that you want to apply for, if after a certain amount of months you don't get what you want then they start expecting you to search and apply for things that are outside of the area that you want. They will also arrange interviews for you occasionally, and it will be what they choose not what you choose.

Any of the unemployed peeps ever thought about starting their own business? (online or otherwise) :)

Thought about it a lot, but wouldn't know what to go into or have any equity to start one. Would probably need a partner too as I'm still at uni.

The point I was trying to make was... don't sit on your arse all day fapping, playing xbox then going online for an hour and looking at the same jobs over and over again and think you are job searching, you are not.

What other options are there?

If I was looking to work in a shop I would get out of the house and distribute my CV, but I'm not I'm looking an office job.

I can't drive around wasting gallons of petrol going to all the businesses in the towns near by, which are all a minimum of 17 miles away.

The local paper is rubbish, there is nothing in it, plus everyone applies for jobs in the paper as it's so obvious.

That leaves the internet..

Tbh i think your very sad if you would turn down Maccy's while unemployed.

I went for my triedent placement at mcdonalds and turned it down as it was so shocking. I then went to a factory that worked for case designing the sprayers and learned a hell of a lot more (CAD/CAM work)

If i lost my job now, id take any job i could. Even if it meant sweeping a floor for 5-6hours a day.

Ok, lets do the money maths...

5 hours of sweeping a day, 5 days a week. This will destroy your soul, you will have no motivation and likely you will go crazy

£5.80 * 5 = £29
£29 * 5 = £145 a week (less a bit for tax and ni)

housing benefit...

shared accomodation - £68.44
1 bedroom - £109.32
2 bedrooms - £126.58
3 bedrooms - £149.59
4 bedrooms - £205.97
5 bedrooms - £305.00

jobseekers allowance £65.45

68.44 + 65.45 = £133.89

On top of this you can also claim council tax, tax credits, child benefits, disability and god knows what else.

claiming housing and jobseekers alone comes to almost £500 a month

Personally I think its messed up that people can get £1200 a month for doing bugger all but ive worked quite a few years so might aswell claim back some of the tax/ni I have put into the system before it is all taken up by families claiming disability when they are not really disabled, child benefits and living in a 5 bedroom house

Not only that but sitting at home with bugger all to do while unemployed is just soul destroying! I spent 8 months last year looking for work in my desired field, went on a handful of interviews with varying reasons for not getting the job. about half way through I decided to start applying for anything just to keep me going/busy while I searched for the job in my desired area even if it was the same or a similar amount of money to JSA.

Ended up working at a fruit and veg merchants from 2:30am till 8:30am 6 mornings a week for a couple of months and it was refreshing to be out of the house!

A lot of cleaning jobs aren't bad either and certainly worth a look (used to clean when at uni for a few years to pay for everything). The pay for a lot of places isn't half bad and it keeps you busy for a few hours a night. There's also nothing stopping you from still looking for a job in something you really want to do while cleaning. if you find something you hand your notice in and be on your way

here you can do whatever for the first 12 months, just showing on a piece of paper to show you have searched for jobs after 12 months you go to an external agency who show you new jobs in the area you could apply for whilst continuing to sign on every fortnight, then after 18months they can make you go on a back to work scheme of somekind not sure yet, i think most of the hardcore claimants sign off at this point as i've heard a claim resets after 12 weeks from signing off.

Job Searching is totally demoralising. I couldn't take anymore and with no jobs appearing anywhere, I ended up taking on a course to further my education. At least it's more beneficial, although I get less than I did when I was on JSA.

I hate being unemployed, (well, disabled now :( ) went from doing more hours than I should each day but loving it, to having a little accident and bam, can't work anymore - awesome

My typical day:
Get up, shower, coffee.
Read forums, browse crappy internet.
Go do some writing (makes me feel slightly useful)
Eat mid morning
Grab my walking stick and hobble outside with the dog for an hour.
Play xbox / game on pc - usually xbox though (lol)
Then watch movies / tv on media pc with the Mrs.

It sucks, would rather work. Although I plan to put more time into the writing side of it.

I dunno how some of my mates do it, fully grown 18 year old men, still sponging off their parents.
Some of them get up in the afternoon and just do nothing all day, it's pretty disgraceful. Even now we've finished college they won't look for a job, just wait til uni comes round and rely on their parents some more.
