Big Bike Thread

Had another great evening biking last night. Carbisdale Red and Blue followed by the Balblair black.

Looking forward to Wolftrax at some point this month

Stupid tools didn't come today, I wanted to fit my SS properly :(

It's almost done, enough to try the gear out properly anyway which I did last night.

Got my whip and stuff coming tomorrow to put the proper SS cog on.

Question about my forks... I feel very much like I'm too heavy for them, the preload adjuster does next to nothing.

They're these Suntours:

So they're coil spring and 'Hydraulic speed-lock cartridge', so it's not that they need pumping up, is it?

If that's the case, can anyone recommend an XC type fork, 100mm, for me? I weigh approaching 15 stone, but the riding I do isn't heavy. I do plan to get my act together and going to proper trails but tbh will only be XC type stuff still.

Can £160 or so get me something worth buying? Or rather enough of an improvement over the Suntour pieces of poo, anyway. I found when I look on bike shops and try to find reviews for the forks I find, often can't find any so none the wiser.

Not a very old frame. It's a 2002 Kona Lavadome.

There are some nice USE Alien posts, but they're well over 50 quid. I'll keep looking. I've started trying to find US retailers that will ship here, but I'll probably end up incurring customs fees knowing my luck, so it's probably not worth it.

Get it reamed out to 27.2 at a bike shop.

Thanks, I've sent them a message and I'll see what they say, if they have them and how much it'd be.

If I did want to get new forks, would £160-180 be enough to get hold of something notably better?

Price range is Rock Shox Tora 302 U-turns, Marzocchi 22 RLOs and stuff. A few friends do a bit of dirt jumping and whatnot and I'll probably end up going with them, I'm a pansy though so I don't suppose I'll be doing them any damage. Worth an upgrade or save my money?

Nearly any fork by marzocchi or rock shox is probably going to be an improvement on the suntours xcm in all honesty.

That's what I was thinking, they're just chucked on at factory. I really like the bike but have never been much impressed by the forks from day one.

I'll have a save up and have a better look when I've got a bit of wedge, Marzocchi 44 RLOs look nice for £200. They won't blow up if my mates force me into throwing myself off things I don't want to throw myself off either. Think I'll try and get something with air shocks so I can nick a mate's pump and compensate for me being a fatty :D

Thanks for your help :)

I get my tools tomorrow as well and my brakes ... finally. Bit nervous to be fair. First time I'll have taken something off and fitted a replacement. I can do the basic stuff like remove the chain etc.

I'll also be taking off the cassette when I fit the brakes just to give it a clean and remove that annoying plastic spoke protector. I've a;ready made sure the rear derailleur can't shift off the big ring.

Marzocchi moved their production from Italy to Taiwan to be done by Suntour.

Yeah saw that but still thought did the internals for the shocks and bigger forks seems not :(. Suntour had a stand at the world cup showcasing some of there new forks they all felt as bad as the ones on the mrs Myka like bloody pogo sticks!

Was that when all their forks started to go a bit pear shaped? Or am I thinking of another company?

Yep, although I think it happened when they dropped the Zokes!

I think the new Marzocchi forks moved manufacturing back to Italy. So reliability/QA is back to normal standards.

Marzocchi haven't really been in the game since the Z1 forks. They haven't done anything wrong, it's just the competition has been better. 66 < 36. 888 <40's/Boxxers.
