Media Streaming for house- Ideas

I'm just looking at kitting my house at with streaming media and looking at getting an Acer Revo, can I ask why you have a Windows Home Server hosting your media and also a Revo?
Can't you just use the Revo to host your media and leave that on 24/7, wouldn't it be cheaper to run? This is all new to me and I was just looking at getting a Revo and nothing else apart from my main pc.

My plan is to have multiple Revo's all pulling data from the central server. This is ideally suited to the server as it can serve multiple connections with ease. The Revo is a great little box and if you've got low usage requirements then it's certainly up to the job!

Media collections are growing so the server allows me to easily add new disks to increase the capicity without having to re-install everything on the Revo if you update the disk on that. (which I think is a 2.5" drive so limited in its max capacity).

Playstation 3, They're cheap and you'll get 2 advantages out of it, media streaming and game play :P

The Streaming is good, all you need is a computer on the same network with a media program such as WMP or Tversity.

only downside is PS3 support for .MKV files (usually standard 720 or 1080p files) however you can get a .MKV to .VOB converter and the ps3 supports .VOB, Hopefully there will be an update for .MKV support in the months to come

That makes sense, I'll start with a Revo and at some point in the future add a central server.
Cheers:)

"only" downside? Thats a huge downside, it means it wont play *anything* recent really without conversion. Useless. :p

WDlive and some decent homeplugs is all you require.

Will play anything you can stream in its direction.

Best buy I've made this year.

The sony mentioned above looks decent but doesn't have network streaming abilities yet, although its seemingly scheduled for a firmware update to enable it.

The Sony does have network streaming and has excellent implementation of DLNA. It streams just about any .mkv that I have (it uses divx engine) and it streams FLAC audio as well.

Have look at http://www.sony.co.uk/product/blu-ray-disc-player/bdp-s370#pageType=TechnicalSpecs

If you want to see what it plays. Plus its upscaling engine does a nice job on smoothing low bitrate rips. The engine used is an updated version of the PS3's media software. The interface is the same Sony Crossbar interface that the PS3 uses.

Its implementation of iPlayerHD and 5Live is better than on my media center.

Windows Home Server holds all of my 1080P MKV Movies.

These are streamed via my PS3 to my TV with no problems at all. I use PS3 Media server on the Home Server. Works a treat (prob the only real use for my PS3 to be honest)

Another for PS3 and PS3 media server, got it connect via cat5e to machine upstairs, streams Blurays and all my Apple lossless music, pretty much plays anything.

ah thanks guys, so in order to play MKV's on a PS3 you would need something like WHS with a ps3 pluggin that converts the MKVs on the fly?
