So I was snooping around DxDiag and I thought my DxDiag looked a little wierd in the Display Adapter settings, it says my Approx Total Memory is 744mb. I have 2x4870 1GB though so I thought that was a little odd, but when I saved all information to desktop it says this

Display Memory: 744 MB
Dedicated Memory: 2029 MB
Shared Memory: 2811 MB

What exactly is the display memory and is this bad that it only says 744mb? I looked around the net and heard people saying they had more Display memory not less. I have 64bit Windows with 8GB of memory to, thanks for the info.

Well for starters with crossfire although you have two times 1g, the computer (games) only really see 1g of it.

That doesnt mean the other 1g is not being used, its just that 1gb is being used at any one time. This becuase of the dual nature of the cards.

If on the other hand you had just one board with ONE core but 2gb of ram, then all 2gb would be available to the computer at the same time.

Its a common markiting scam by amd/nvidia, when they say 5970 with 2gb of ram!!! The compu/game can only address 1gb of that at any one time.

As with your display memory... check your bios... you may have some reserved or it may just be normal that your display output is currently using up 256mb of video ram....

When I go to Texture Memory in PC Wizard it also says 744mb, just find it wierd and not sure whats causing it, my motherboard specs are in the sig so if its something in the bios and anyone knows just lemme know, or if its something else.

EDIT

After a little more testing it seems that I only get this reading when I enable Crossfire, when I disable crossfire I get no texture memory even available in PC Wizard but in DxDiag I get more Display Memory etc, I get these readings without crossfire

Display Memory: 3825 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1014 MB
Shared Memory: 2811 MB

I dont know what the display memory is but

Dedicated memory: The total amount of ram on the Graphics card (2gb when in crossfire and 1gb with it disabled)

Shared memory: The amount of RAM from your system (not the GFX cards) that can be used if the Dedicated memory gets full

I have ended up taking the second card out for a while because to be honest I barely get a benifit from Crossfire at 1600x1000 anyway so I dont think I will have to worry about it for the moment. Thanks for the help guys :)
